I have stayed at the Castillo 3 times last year. It is hands down the best value in SJO for a hotel. It is a 3 min taxi ride to the HDR. It is a 5 min walk to Zona Blue. A 1 block walk to NF.

They have drivers and a nice quiet restaurant. Just tell the taxi divers "Hotel Cas-ti-o" They will know.

I think the problem here is that I somehow went through a web link that directed booking through a travel agent. Here is their response. (I emailed the DR directly and they quoted me a price that is exactly half the amount. I wonder if the DR knows that they are losing out on business because of this agent? )

The rate for your reservation arrival October 17th. And departure October 26th. 2008, for 10 nights is $1, 600 plus taxes 16. 39% the total amount (tax included) is $1, 862 use this exact amount on the authorization form!

To guarantee your reservation, print the authorization form, sign it, scan it, and send it as an attachment by e-mail or fax.

Important_ we appreciate if you send us your information as soon as possible, because we have a lot request for those dates and to send you the confirmation voucher, thank you.

The problem that you and others are having is that you seem to think there are only 3 hotels in all of San Jose. If you were going to a "third world country" beach during the rainy season, you'd find plenty of vacancies. SJ may be a third world capital city where you wouldn't expect to get much off-season tourism, but the 3 hotels you limited yourself to are also the 3 hotels that are most well known to mongers, a travel segment that does not experience the same seasonality as mainstream tourism.

The HDR in particular is the beneficiary of this mindset. There are many guys who don't know much about CR beyond that it is supposed to be a good monger destination and that the world famous Hotel Del Rey and its Blue Marlin Bar are thee places to go. Besides such newbies, there are also a few vets who feel they absolutely always have to be in the heart of the action that the Blue Marlin represents or even those who go to CR and never venture out of the pink palace. Because of the resulting demand, HDR management feels they can get away with charging ridiculous premiums for mediocre rooms, $10 chica fees (how is that chica-friendly?), lousy casino payouts, high drink prices and surly greedy service. If it weren't for its excessive fame amongst (relatively) ignorant mongers who don't know any better, I'd have to wonder why anyone stays there.

The reason the Presidente doesn't have rooms in October is because they happen to be undergoing a major remodel this month. Even if they weren't, it is a has-been as far as being a monger favorite. Their chica dress code (instituted nearly 2 years ago?) sent a strong signal as to what type of business they really preferred having.

And finally the Sportsman's, it is a really nice hotel that targets the monger market. Its management and staff provide the type of attention to the needs of our market that the other two places increasingly lack. That $90 rate is probably for one of the more premium single rooms but much better rates can be had IF you have a CRT card. That said because it is such a good place for guys like us, and is so heavily promoted and recommended on this board and others, it is also the first place to book up. Remember that, unlike the ecotourism market, the flow of mongers to CR is much more steady and so the places that are most popular with our crowd can book up even during what would be the off-season in CR and other places (like Saint Maarten).

But that doesn't mean those are your only choices. Did you check with the Amistad, Castillo, Dunn Inn, Casa Vino, Amon Plaza (casino rate), Inca Real, Brittania, BW Downtown, Morazon, Balmoral, Hotel Freebird, Royal Dutch? All have been favorably reviewed and are chica-friendly. If that doesn't work for you, I've also stayed at the Hotel Doral on a number of occasions (a little further from the Gulch though close to several tico nightclubs, $30/nt including tax, $5 chica fee and very decent rooms) and have NEVER failed to find a vacancy.

It has been a while, but I considered going there next week for five days. This is what i got from the local hotels.

    Presidente:

    Greetings from Hotel Presidente.

"Unfortunately we do not have rooms available for the requested days, if you wish we can add your name to our waiting list so we will contact you as soon as we recibe any cancellation."

    Sportsmans..

"Rooms are 90 per night for a single, and we can accomodate you for a portion of your stay".

    Del rey

"Yes, we have a single room available the rate for the time specified will be $900 dollars". (yes, $180 per night, and I told them I was a return quest).

Fuck Costa Rica. You would think I was going to the french riviera instead of a third world capital city. I booked a ticket instead to St. Maarten.

Gentlemen, thank you for all the advice. I am leaning towards a short trip to TJ in October (a week or less), and perhaps a combined PTY/SJO trip in November (a 9 day trip).

For TJ, I think I will fly into San Diego, take the trolley, and hotel in San Ysidro. No rental car needed. If I reserve soon, I can save on the airfare and lock up a room. Thinking about spending some nights hotelling in TJ, but I'd like your recommendations for safe/clean/inexpensive hotels near the zone.

I've had both mechanical transactions and GFE's in TJ in 2000. With hundreds of providers in the area, all you need to do is find one you like. Spanish skills and an ability to read people help. The posts help. Not that much different from my experiences in other places. The proximity to El Norte and its conveyor belt of dollar bearing mongers mitigates the economic neediness we experience in Central America.

The PTY-SJO trip might be a little trickier. I've got a cover story. The pland is for toe-curling, bone rattling encounters with Colombian Mattress Monsters for a couple of days, followed by a few days alone in SJO trolling the local MP's for the diamonds-in-the-rough and the platoons of providers in the BM and DR, and then, if my Nica comes down for a couple of days, a few days of GFE's. Towards the end, I should be pretty drained and can appreciate seducing my Nica.

But I would appreciate any advice on inexpensive hotels in San Jose that are close to BM and Del Rey. A cursory check on airfares shows that on some airlines to leave SJO for IAD, I would have to fly back to PTY.

Ah, DR. I have some nice memories of Santo Domingo. I've spent many a summer down there as a kid. I've got relatives down there, so cover story not necessary. (I just have to swallow enough bile to talk to those commie cretins.) When I went in 2000, I had some nice experiences taking providers out of the two clubs downtown and taking them to the push-button hotels they called "cabinas". I also had two nice experiences at an MP that fronted as a beauty salon.

The order I'd suggest would be similar to Ace's but my reasoning for you would be a little different.

You mentioned the possible need for a cover story as a major factor in your decision. It's really not that hard to come up with a cover story for going to CR (unless you've already been there a zillion times like many of us). Sure others might suspect you're real motivation. So what? You're in the military and just doing what many soldiers do. Many regular Americans also go to CR for many reasons and you can use any of those reasons as your excuse - fishing, surfing, eco-tourism, etc.

The other major factor you mentioned was logistics. Flights to CR from IAD are nearly as easy to get as they are to San Diego and nearly as cheap. Whatever amount you MIGHT save on airfare, you'd probably pay in the extra cost of hotel rooms in San Diego, which by the way is still a schlep from Tijuana. Does that mean you might also want to lay out even more cash for a rental car or rely on the trolley? Alternatively, staying overnight in Tijuana itself puts you in an urban sewer that makes the much complained about crime in San Jose seem like being in Disneyland.

One factor you didn't mention is the difference between the chicas. I'm no expert on Tijuana, but I think for the casual visitor it is harder to find chicas that aren't the mechanical can you come already non-GFE's in a high traffic place like Tijuana than it is in CR. The regular Tijuana mongers in that forum section will probably disagree with me on that (and probably on my other pints as well) but you asked the question here in the CR section and that is the way I see it.

So, IMHO, CR beats Tijuana hands down for you. What about Panama? Well it is right next door to CR and so will be similar in terms of logistics (i.e. airfare hotel pricing, meals, etc.). I think it would be a bit more of a stretch in terms of your cover story since it is not anywhere nearly as popular with Americans for "normal" vacations. You can find some gorgeous chicas there particularly many Colombianas and, like CR, many will be more GFE than Tijuana. However I think the chica pricing is a bit more and the number and type of monger venues is nothing like CR and particularly world famous places like the BM and KL. Panama's mongering revolves much more around stripclubs, which can be pricey as it is everywhere. I don't believe PC has the daytime cheapo MP scene that SJ offers. And the only possible cost savings would be fishing in those clubs for later dates with those chicas. Again, my knowledge and experience in Panama is limited and others may say I'm completely wrong but I would have to rank Panama a couple of notches down on the list for YOU, but still well above Tijuana.

What about those other destinations that Ace just added to the mix? There is no doubt at all that both DR and Rio (GIG) are top notch mongering destinations. For Rio in particular I'd have to say just "Wow", the garotas are exceptionally hot. However, I'm not sure how those 2 places compare with CR in terms of the "cover story" that you say you'd need. I will say that, in terms of logistics, for just a quick weeklong trip, Rio might be a bit problematic. Airfares to there would be the highest of any of these destinations and its a long ass flight (though it can be done overnight). That sort of situation usually mitigates towards a somewhat longer trip over which you can spread those costs. Also once you're there it is not nearly as cheap as it used to be since the dollar has not been doing well against the real. And finally, for Brazil, there is that expensive visa that you'd need to get very fast if you wanted to go by the end of this month.

I haven't been to the DR yet but it is definitely on my list of places to check out (and on the list of many of my CR buddies) as various aspects of the CR scene decline (or we simply become jaded by our many trips there). Another plus factor for DR that no one mentioned is that, unlike all the options on your original list, you haven't been there yet. Why do you have to limit yourself to places you've already been? Why not try out some place new? I'm not sure where I'd place the Dominican Republic on that list but it would be definitely near the top and for your quick trip, ahead of distant Rio and waaayyy ahead of nearby Tijuana.

    Short trip

I flew last month with short notice from IAD( Dullas airport) to SJO for 350usd. The order of short trip would be Costa Rica due to cost from IAD and the talent. Second I would add Domincan Republic (santa Domingo or Purto plata) then would be Panama, last would be Tijuana. Going to Costa Rica or Panama gives you a large selection of chicas. But the place to go would be to Rio... That is #1 for the selection of south American chica's.

    Just my 2 cents

Below some choices 1 Rita from Brazil, 2 Karin from Dominican Republic, 3 Karina from Costa Rica

I am shipping out for the Middle East before the holidays. I would like the forum's advice in deciding where I should I go for some pre-deployment mongering, as where I am going will be as dry as a bone.

I used to go to Tijuana in 2000, have been to San Jose in 2006, and have made several recent trips to Panama City. I hope to get in a October and an early November trip in, each of a week or less duration.

A short Tijuana trip would have easy logistics. Fewer questions are asked for a pass to Los Angeles. A flight from the east coast (IAD or RIC) isn't too expensive, and hopefully neither are hotels and rental cars in San Diego. I don't know what the current quality of the AB and CC talent is.

Costa Rica requires a cover story. Getting a good rate on a flight and a hotel might require at least a month's advance purchase. I recall the talent in the lobby of the Del Rey ranged from porn star to fryolater operator at the Dairy Queen.

Panama requires a cover story, good rates for flight/hotel. However, I could easily spend a week going through the "sampler package" at Golden Times. (Have they raised their prices?) I am still fascinated by the snap shots I took of one particular CMM (Colombian Mattress Monster)....

So help a fellow monger out. Where would you go if you could do two short (and hopefully not too expensive) trips?

    non-smoker

"Go ahead and flame me for my anti-smoking stance, I expect it. I have never and will never like being around smoke, and cigar smoke is the worst."

No Flame here J Sax. Im' with you 100%.

Its gotten to the point that after a night at BM / KL I just soak my cloths just to get rid of the smoke smell.

Thankfully most nights I session and get the smoke off me and her before hitting la cama.

The government has just stated to premote non smoking. If its like any other law thats talked about or passed in CR, it will be long after our lifetimes that any change occures.

    Here's my report

I'll be back in SJ tomorrow and Thur so will file another report later...

But I was there a few weeks ago, and this is my report:

Things are about the same all over as they have been for years except the price has gone up a bit - IN GENERAL, not always specifically.

The Blue Marlin is still jumping on Thursday night and I presume the weekend though I was just there on a Wed and Thur. The selection of girls is about the same, I guess, as it has always been. It might be that there are less great looking girls now than before or else it may be that I am just jaded.

Fewer seem willing to just come over and talk for awhile. Like strip clubs in the states, it seems the m.o. now is to get right to business and ask if you want company and if not they are out of there. There was a time when they would be willing to just sit and talk over a drink for a bit before hitting you up for the "deal". Of course this still can happen, it just seems to me it's not as common as it once was. I like to talk to the girls a bit and then decide, I'm not a "choose quick and go" guy.

Key Largo was about the same too. It gets going after the music starts. The first room you enter from the BM side is always full of about 80% or more fat and/or ugly chicks. But sometimes a gem is found in there, almost by accident it seems. The other rooms tend to fare better in KL, especially around midnight to 2am.

Zona Blue or now Little Havana has lost some sparkle for me. I hate cigar smoke. I just find it a dumb macho habit that causes cancer to those who smoke and to those who have to breathe their secondary smoke. I hope the cigar aspect of LH is not successful and it reverts back to just a regular bar, where there is always more than enough smoke, in any case. Go ahead and flame me for my anti-smoking stance, I expect it. I have never and will never like being around smoke, and cigar smoke is the worst.

As to the girls at ZB/LH there were about 12 all in all when I went in, probably around 5-6pm, and a few were pretty nice. I ended up not getting one because the 2-3 I was interested in got grabbed by a guy who was having a birthday and so took about 7 girls back to a room. So it goes. First come, first served. He must have had a great birthday party! I left disappointed because there was no one else there I wanted to session with.

But aside from the cigar thing, I do like the bigger size of the new LH bar. And I guess $3 for a beer isn't bad, but be careful what brand name liquor you ask for - a guy next to me ordered something and was charged $11 for it! He was shocked and said next time he'd know to ask. Said it's much less than that in the states. Best to just drink beer since I think mixed drinks in there are now $4-5 each. I didn't go look at the new rooms as I am not that interested in staying there at this point. I'll keep checking out the talent at LH, though I doubt it will ever be as fun a place to go as it used to be, for me.

I stopped in at NF and had a look - same old bored looking girls with "don't pick me" on their faces for the most part, and not that great looking either. By the way, the "don't pick me" was not based on me specifically because I stayed behind the mirror. I don't like the whole mirror thing, though; I like to have a girl come up to me at a bar and talk to her a bit before going back to a room - UNLESS I happen to see someone who is "just my type" physically, sitting there, then I sometimes am willing to just pick her and take my chances. In this case, and in the past few years when I've stopped in for a look at NF, that did not happen. There was a time 3-4 years ago when I did find a couple in there I really liked, though, so you never know.

So the first night I was tired from a big fiasco with my flight that I won't go into, suffice it to say I didn't get into town until around 8pm instead of the 9:30am it should have been. So I wasn't really up for much action. But my old standby Dominicana walked in and I ended up going back to the room with her for a nice massage and etc. She's a sweet girl and very accommodating and I always go with her once during a trip if I see her, and she gives me a good price. So that was pretty good.

Then the next night I saw this blonde with one of the cutest faces I've seen for a long time and I started talking with her. She claimed to be 20, from Venezuela and to be new at this business - only 10 days or so at it as I recall; but she came here because the economy in her town in Ven. was very bad and she - of course - has a child back there to support. I tend to believe she was at least relatively new because she was very nervous in the bar. I finally talked to her about that and then she loosened up. After awhile I made my deal ($70 or $75 as I recall) and we went back to my room. She gave me a cbj and we played around a bit. She was really into getting banged HARD FROM BEHIND, so that was kinda fun. I gave it to her so hard and long my knees were so tired I could hardly walk. She seemed to enjoy it and so did I; she banged back if you know what I mean. But she lacked a certain something in bed, not sure exactly what; just a little too reserved aside from the doggy style hard banging. But it was worth it for the excitement of seeing a face and body that really turned me on in the bar, and then getting to take her back to my room. Something great about that!

Later I went over to KL just to have a drink and look-see, and some short little Nica who was a little cute but not cute enough to pay for started asking me to dance with her. I told her I was NOT interested in sex tonight, that I'd already had mine. She insisted on dancing with me anyway so I obliged. Well, long story short, she started telling me she had a child back in Nica who needed a $5K operation, and then started hitting me up for money. "Just $20 to hang out with her and dance". I said no. Then, "Just $10 for a cab home". At that point I just left, over her objections. I don't like being begged and pressured for money, for nothing, even charity. If she really wanted some dough she could have offered to give me bj for $20 or something like that. But really, she didn't even turn me on much and I didn't like the way she was working me.

Moral of the story: when a chick starts in with the "I desperately need $" bit, get the hell out of there.

All in all I had a good enough time during my 2 nights in San Jose. Not one for the record books, but it wasn't bad. Hopefully tomorrow and Thur will be better.

After almost 10 years of mongering in Prague I decided to try a closer venue with a reasonable exchange rate. Costa Rica and specifically San Jose became my target of operations. After reading the excellent information on this forum and one other I decided to stay in San Jose at the Del Rey.

Before getting to the Del Rey and Key Largo, I would like to give my impressions of Zona Blue, New Fantasy and Sportsmen's Lodge. When I walked into ZB late one afternoon it was full of drunk gringos smoking cigars who were generally loud and quite obnoxious. To make matters worse, the available women were average or less. They also looked bored and annoyed by the loud drunken gringos. Also, Pamela was not available so I took off.

I then went to NF and it wasn't much better in terms of available girls. I have to say that the hostess, Suzanne, was very charming I would have done her but of course this isn't possible.

I then went to Sportsmens Lodge and it was very quiet. I was there late afternoon and there were only a few women available. I spoke with one girl and when I began to leave she asked me for 6,000 Colones for dinner. I respectfully declined.

The Del Rey and Key Largo were outstanding. The hotel was nice and very comfortable. The hotel staff was very helpful and there was security everywhere. The thing that struck me about the Del Rey was that even in the morning and afternoon there are women everywhere and some real lookers on top of it. At night the Del Rey and the bars are loaded with women and the Blue Marlin in particular. I noticed that when the girls walk into the Del Rey they have to present their ID or surrender their passport to one of the security guards. Also, the women take up positions all around the lower level so you can move around to survey the possibilities. This was a target rich environment to say the least. Similar to Darlings or K5 in Prague but a lot less expensive.

To me, however, the best thing was to go across the street around 10:30 PM to Key Largo. This is basically a dance place with many, many girls there by 11 PM. Great bands every night. I finished just about every night there drinking, dancing and settling on my Tica for the night. When I finally decided on one which was usually around 1AM it was back to the Del Rey where the Tica presented her ID to security and we were off to the 5th floor until the sun came up.

In summary, I had no luck at ZB, NF or Sporstmen's. The Del Rey and Key Largo in particular were excellent and are as good or better than any place I've been to in Europe - and I've been to a lot of them. As far as Slavic girls vs. Latina girls, I like them both and they have their own special and unique qualities.

    Paddy from Prague
Paddy I have to agree ,there are too many post's from people who have grown tired of the DELREY and seem to focus on the changing enviroment but for real its still agreat place to visit and reall easy and safe . QR
