Last week I was supposed to meet up with an amigo at Las Pulgas. At around 8 pm he texted me he was on his way. After hanging out most of the night he never showed up. As I learned the next day, he thinks he was the victim of a mesaro and lady working as a team who may have drugged his cervaza. After several beers it seems he became disoriented and does not have much of a memory of what happened next. Although this kind of thing is not an everyday occurance (yet) you should always take precautions. Never leave your drink unattended. Don't accept a drink that has not been opened in front of you. It might even be a good idea to carry your own opener and insist on doing it yourself. That way the masero can't reattach a cap and then pretend to open it in front of you.

And if you are somewhat of a regular down there it sure helps to have a girl or masero who you take good care of with propinas and try to develop a friendship with who will watch out for you.

I just returned from my Weekly escapades in Tijuana. It seems I am in a good cycle with my "novia" SG. She is very "liberal' it seems with her time with me. I like it, because as in the past (like the stock market) there are ups and downs!)

I have never used the Otay border but I have been told by many people that you do not save any time by using it. It may be less busy but there are also less border patrol agents there so in the end it all washes out. From my discussions with others I also know that the taxi ride costs more to HK and AB since it is a further distance. From San Ysidro it is a $5 taxi ride. From Otay it is $10.

I have used this crossing many times. Usually when I am spending the weekend with fellow mongers that don't have the sentri pass. I have used this a dozen times and each time took less than 10 minutes to cross. This is around noon or afternoon. As for cost, yes, it does cost a little more but then you have to weigh how much your time is worth. This tends to even out as parking is just $5 there. Sometimes you can find a spot free along the streets. But there are other factors as well, like what time you plan on leaving Tijuana. Like in past postings, between 12am and 3am, the lines should not take you longer than 15 min. You can find other time factors if you do some research from other mongers here. This is just one of the examples.

You're confusing the car permit with the tourist card although you won't be asked for either driving around Tijuas.

Apparently this is so because I went in my car again and was never stopped or asked for any permit while crossing into mexico, driving around Tijuana or crossing back into the US. I also noticed the large amount of California license plates happily driving around Tijuana over there which only proves that most of you telling me I was crazy to drive my own car into Tijuana where obviously over exaggerating. My novia at one point even cut off a cop car then kept driving and they didn't do anything and she didn't care as well.

Spent the B-Day weekend in Tijuana. While driving through lovely San Ysidro. I found a place where the rate was 12. 43 to 1, so I cashed in a butt-load of dollars.

Sounds like you had a blast TomJack. I've been monitoring the exchange rate lately and the dollar has been gaining strength. So far the best place that I have seen to get pesos is the one next to the McDonalds on the US side. As of last Sat, I saw it at 12. 54 to buy pesos. All others are slightly lower. Just got into Tijuana last night for my second trip in less that 3 weeks. I stayed at Ticuan (hitting up an escort from MLB for a TLN for the first time) and damn, it's a very nice hotel. For land crossings, yes, it's a "trust system." I once drove all the way from LA to La Paz without one, with no problems. As Artisttyp said, you will only need it if the fuzz decide to fuck with you for some reason. So, in this day and age, it's better to waste $25 and CYA.

The point is, they don't have a good system in place to issue ones to people coming in from land crossings. So, you'll have to stop and get one.

There's not really a bad time to go during the Fall actually. It does depend on your perspective on crowds, whether you like them or want to avoid them. Since you're already making a trip during Labor Day weekend, I suspect you aren't bothered by crowds. During the Fall is the Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept. 16th (not May 5th as most Americans tend to believe) , I personally like the activity and excitement on the streets during that time...

I just booked my 2nd trip to Tijuana. Labor Day weekend. I also wanted to book another trip in the fall. When is it a good time to go in the fall. Say October or November. My concern is that the talent won't be that great because the girls start to leave for the holidays. Any suggestions. Really low airline deals right now so I would like to take advantage of it and book early so I can pay for 1 trip and get 2 out of it.

Keg gave you some good info. I have been down there for the last 2 Halloweens and they have been alot of fun. Also this year the dates for the Tequila festival are Oct 9-13, a good place to have some fun outside of Zona Norte. I also enjoy being down the week leading up to Christmas, its not really a ghost town as some people believe, and everyone seems to be in a pretty festive mood.
