Actually if Rikky actually does make it to "San Antone" the best most convenient monger destination for him would be Monterrey. If you think Tijuana is full of violent criminals and crooked cops, Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo are even worse.

I'd recommend getting further away from the border if you can. San Antonio is only a quick 3 hour road trip to the border, whereas Dallas or Houston are great cities but much further from the border. Or even Austin which is my favorite city in Texas.

I know what you mean about Nuevo Laredo as I previously lived in San Antonio and frequented the zona many times. A long time ago, there were policemen at the entrance checking everybody coming in and out toting maching guns. The policemen are now all gone with only the Sedena (soldiers) patrolling. The soldiers often get into gun battles with the cartel. During my last visit to the bars there, one of the waiters drove me back to my hotel at sunrise. As we approached the first stoplight I saw what appeared to be about 12 soldiers, all toting AR15's, AK47's, etc. I said to my driver, oh, the soldiers are out. He replied, no, those are the narcos. Thery were basically stopping and robbing everybody. Luckily, they knew my driver and waved us through. This scared the Hell out of me. Nuevo Laredo is a seriously dangerous hellhole. On our way to the zona one evening, we passed 2 or 3 trucks that had a dude on top manning a 50 calibre with the cartel name on the side of the truck. Once inside the zone, my buddy and I stepped out of a bar right in front of one of these trucks (who was driving around and around the compound). I quickly ushered both of us back into the bar. Truly amazing to see this going on unstopped. Right then and there you beging to understand how Mexico is a failed state with the cartels controlling it. Some scary crap. So, I will probably hang out over in Ciudad Acuna. Much mellower. There is a bar, Hunter's Club there and a few other bars. Never went to Reynosa but heard the corruption stories similar to Nuevo Laredo.

Poor Yamilet. Think of the steak knife incidents as a Mexican hickey. At least you know she loved you once because was jealous. Texas has a lot of hot Latina chicas. A lot. I live in SD. I wish I had a $20 direct bus to SY. I can take the Coaster then trolley but it takes 3 hours and half without access to a bathroom.

I think I stopped at every town on the east coast and the ride took like 2-3 days. I swore never to ride one again. I can only imagine how long it takes to ride from San Ysidro to LA. You could try the train from Union station and transfer to SD trolley, it would still add time to you trip.

Crossing the border. Took the greyhound down from DTLA to San Ysidro. Only 4 people on the bus which drops you off at the border crossing. Seems great.

Hotel. Took a cab to Hotel Ticuan. Hotel Ticuan is close enough to be able to walk to the action in Zona Norte, but far enough to tell people "I'm just here for the culture, yeah that's it. " has nicer and quieter rooms, and can receive escorts (unlike Cascadas). Check in is officially at 3 but I arrived at 2 and my room was ready.

Tijuana's cons (crime, smells like a toilet, language barrier, shoddy infrastructure / plumbing) are definitely outweighed by its pros (high quality GFE service, excellent food, low low prices) and consider myself very fortunate living in LOS Angeles that Tijuana is so close. I'll look forward to many trips south of the border in the future.
