After crossing over, took the yellow cab to HK and on the way, he was trying to convince us to go to Lexor or something. But we told him we're going to HK. Got there and walked in, and the first thing is the waiters trying to get you upstairs for drinks but my seasoned friends said just keep walking to the bar and we did. This is much cheaper option! We ordered few drinks as we roamed around as other reviewers stated, there's tons of girls and shaving cream shows in the back and upstairs! Not to be missed out! There are always a good selection at all times. Most girs don't travel on the Holidays. Cost too much. Last year there was no difference in quality or quanity. Thanksgiving is not a Mexican holiday. Do you know if there is a local equivalent to Tijuana's Calle Sexta? That would probably be ideal.

Taxis would be roughly $6/8 each way from anything in close proximity to centro. HOWEVER definitely get a few TAXI CO. Numbers to carry around with you. I had a hassle catching a cab outside the mall and the sun was beating down on me like a sledgehammer. For some reason they prefer you to call them for pick ups. Maybe it has to do with crime.

I didn't see anything that resembles a Calle Sexta. There is what is called the triangle where the few Tijuana type bars are then maybe a few for people into cumbia and banda. Unfortunately I found the city to have ZERO vibe but you do need to see it once.

If you are used to good Chinese food (ME / NYC) you will be disappointed. Although I will say it is 1, 000, 000 times better than the crap they serve you in Tijuana.

I believe there is a Hotel Lucerna (same as Tijuana) in Mexicali. The only issue with that would be location if you don't have a car. Mexicali is extremely spread out.

There is Hotel Del Norte which is smack dab in centro and within walking distance to the "triangle" with the clubs. That IMO would be your best bet for centro. Others have mentioned La Chinesca but it didn't look appealing to me (YMCA) when I saw it.

Mexicali is hotter than hell and there is NOTHING there that you can't find in Tijuana under better conditions. With that said if I lived in Calexico I would definitely hang out there. Although more than likely I would take the 2 hr bus ride to Tijuana.

I ate Chinese food there but I wasn't impressed at all. If you have a car you might do a lot better than I did. I've been twice already.

If you drive there (depending from where) you might want to look into San Luis Colorado. Tempe John posted his results a while ago. I've been through there on a bus and something sparked my interest even though it looked tiny. I'd like to go back one day.

Others have said that Mexicali has lots of good Chinese food. I live in one end of the San Gabriel Valley, so I'm surrounded by all the Chinese food one could want or imagine. Just about every major Chinese cuisine style can be found within a 5-minute drive, all is pretty authentic and much of it as good as anything I've had in Hong Kong or Taipei. About the only thing I haven't seen available is roast dog. So, I am always skeptical when a place bills itself as having excellent Chinese food. So I may skip that cuisine altogether. Rocky may have other ideas.

Can anybody give me any intel on some 3-star or maybe 4-star hotels? Rocky the Flying Squirrel wants to go there, but she's never been. Nor have I.

I'm basically looking for someplace semi-decent (think Ticuan) that's fairly close to the local nightlife (not the zona roja).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, my conference trip to Europe in mid December got cancelled and that might be a better time for me. Any chance of getting that reservation changed?

Otherwise I could still go. Or forgo $80. But, ugh, just ate a fee for cancelling conference registration and don't want another one.
