You can 100% definitely go to Mexico with no passport. I went 6 times this summer. If, you choose to, otay only has 1 line. So if they stop you, you were not in the wrong line. At that point ask to buy the 20 bucks day pass. Just say your coming back at 5 am. Don't say "hey bro can I slip you a $20? The fact that the $20 pass is probably a bribe and not official is not our business. . if you go to san Ysidro, with suitcase, probably gone get checked. No suitcase, and walk on Mexican line looking as gringo, 60% time I get checked. Looking like Latino, no suitcase, probably get stopped 30% time at most, if you don't look anyone in eye, or look at them at all, and walk with purpose, like you been through 1000 times. No, chances are the mexican immigration will turn you back. The best thing to do is go passport processing center at UCSD or somewhere else. They will give you a receipt of application. Take this with you and the Mexican immigration will make you purchase a qusasi FMM / Visa for $30.

Just get a passport card at any post office, it is cheaper than a passport book. It takes about 3-6 weeks to get it.

If you look like you could pass for a Mexican or blend in with Mexican people you could try to just go through the lane for mexican passport holders. Many times officials don't even check you at all in that lane. The worst that could happen is if they catch you you just act lost and confused and end up bribing them 20 bucks maximum to let you pass.

Got to HK at 11:15. The alley entrances to HK and Chavelas were both shuttered. Had to enter Coahuila side. There was a short line to get in so we entered through Chavelas. Wasn't a long visit because they shut down at 11:30 and pushed everyone upstairs to Cascadas. Miami Room and the new west wing were both closed. Get your VIP card. It pays for itself with the hotel. The rest of the perks are a bit of a joke. Pesos work just fine in HK, but you have to constantly be calculating. Prices are in dollars. It's a pretty easy conversion at 20:1, but depending on your exact rate it may be a bit better than that (which means you'll be saving some money if you think at 20:1). There are a lot more opportunities for meseros to scam you. A $9 ficha will be like 180 pesos, so you give them a 500 and they bring back a 200 peso note and a handful of coins. Are you going to count all those little coins to make sure they add up to 120 pesos? Also, you are expected to tip people about a buck. That's 20 pesos, which is a coin. Are you going to have a pocketful of 10- and 20-peso coins to tip the bathroom attendant, the robe guy, the cum boy, etc? Little things like that are minor annoyances, but something to think about.

It's less of an issue at 20:1, but when the rate is 18:1 or 19:1, you can screw yourself using shortcuts. I think it's easiest to just use dollars in the zona.
