Depends because you should have a hidden place for the passport so it can't get lost dropped taken if choked out. Either sew a zippered pocket on inside pants or wear thin bathing suit with zippered pocket underneath. Otherwise hide in the hotel room. Much more likely to drop it than have someone find a hidden passport in the room.

For USD to Mex peso I found the best rate with Schwab bank ATM card. I use this at t HSBC bank ATMs. I use the one Calimax supermarket close to HK.

Schwab bank gives a good rate and rebate ATM fees.

For Peso back to USD I use the changer HK club about 50 ft from constituion ave.

Make sure any exchange you go to has 'no commission'.

I was almost tricked into a great rate being flashed on a sign near car park near border.

But when I went to exchange USD to peso the rate was horrible because of COMMISSIONS. I skipped.

They did not advertise the commission and could find out too late if you don't check.

Luckily I asked how much $100 would be in pesos and her answer proved the rate on sign is not the NET rate.
