At very last minute, I'm visiting Tijuana for the first time on Wednesday for 5 days! I'm frantically reading through as much as I can. It appears Ticuan is the place for me in terms of accommodation (I need to work a little).

It's a bit daunting on my own, especially with very little time to research. If anyone happens to be in zona Norte between Wednesday and Saturday, PM me and perhaps we can team up for a while!

Just "nest" in Ticuan for your stay nice and comfy and safe and head on out when not working for the fun sexy times. You can walk all of la zona Norte in 10-15 minutes and will most likely end up in HK the best place whilst exploring the other solid options. I would say spend 2 hours or so researching back in this thread maybe 6 months and take copious notes and printout a map.

I don't know anything about that particular plan. I'm in something called the Sprint Wireless Advantage Club (which is now under T-Mobile since the recent merger) which is a discount program for family and friends of Sprint employees. In that club, there's an "Advantage Unlimited" plan where, in addition to unlimited talk, text, and data for a relatively cheap price you get unlimited talk, text, and LTE data in Mexico and Canada at no additional cost.

Yeah, I have Sprint / T-Mobile and roaming internet service works very well in like 90% of places (and is free with my plan). One issue I've had is internet never seems to work once I cross the border into Tijuana so I always have to catch a taxi (as opposed to Uber) if I can't get the 10 peso bus. Internet doesn't seem to work until the taxi takes me further into Tijuana a bit. Maybe it's just a matter of restarting my phone.

Pre-printing the FMM form helped me avoid the fee at the border. I think because the pre-printed form is actually registered with the Government. Anyway. It worked for me this trip. I showed them my form on entry. I got in with no FMM fee.

Another guy said he was charged $30 fee on Saturday night. So that FMM shakedown is still on.

Yeah, filling out the FMM form beforehand is also a signal to the Mexican customs officials that you're an experienced, somewhat knowledgeable border crosser (even if you actually aren't). They'd much, much rather "pick on" someone less experienced and less knowledgeable about the FMM paperwork as those people would tend to be much easier to shake down for the fee.

T-mobile usually works in Tijuana. I will sometimes switch directly to the Telcel towers if the reception is poor. If this happens turn off adapting tower selection & select T-mobile. You many have to restart your phone.

This is the current status of Mexico. They use a stop light system. Green is resume normal activities with caution, Yellow some limitations, orange is please stay home. I walked to the Taxi Libre spot (it changes constantly), checked the price, got into a taxi, and told the "100 pesos". He reluctantly agreed. But, then he passed my destination (Cascadas) and stopped in front of Adelitas, telling me this was Cascadas.

You could eliminate the luck component by switching to T-Mobile. I've had zero issues along the many border towns, on the coast (eg Vallarta) and deep interior (eg CDMX). If you plan on spending a lot of time in Mexico, T-Mobile is a pretty good way to go.
