I had to go to El centro to run some errands so I figured why not pop into the zona just to see if my babygirl Catalina is available. Look at what is happening in Europe and Latin America. Most of the world has no vaccines. US is getting people vaccinated, but Mexico is not administering vaccines yet. People are becoming far less abiding of any restrictions -- the increased traffic on the border just being one example. Despite the vaccine, infection numbers in the US are flattening and not going down. Even if numbers in the US improve, they will continue to get worse in Mexico, and that may prevent a border opening even in April.

Regarding border wait: Consider yourself lucky if you only have to wait an hour during regular hours. The wait on the border keep getting longer. Based on above observations, it is doubtful if PedWest will open anytime before April 21. Also, I am noticing many times the wait duration posted for crossing via Otay is longer the San Ysidro.

P.S. Really appreciate the good info posted on this forum. Would love to know what precautions people and chicas are taking to avoid Covid-19.

These wait times are much longer than normal. Probably the traffic is on an uptrend as people think the pandemic is getting under control and PedWest is still closed (I think we will see another surge, in US and especially in Mexico). What is the best way to cross using Otay Mesa? Is there free parking available near Otay Mesa on the US side? What is the cab fares and availability to / from Otay Mesay from / to Zona norte?

Also a great idea is to try to always have some "wipeys" with you. The wet baby wipe type wipeys. Always keep some in your car. And it's never a bad idea to carry some around at all times. I had a little personal travel pack of wipeys that literally saved my ass one night in the zona. The pedestrian line, backing way up to taxi stand 7-8 PM on a weeknight, is a lot longer than I ever see it. Lucky it took only over 1 hour for you to cross. So CBP did make improvements in their procedures to speed up the line.

The car lanes stretch way back to Benito Juarez, probably 2 to 3 hours.

There is some paid restrooms by the pedestrian line. They are a little north of where the pedestrian bridge is.

A couple years back I was driving back across the border after midnight. The car lanes were packed with long lines. I waited over 1 hour; my bladder was bursting. I parked the car and the side of the road and went out looking for a bano, bit found nothing. The area was dark; all trinket shops had closed.

A guy approached me saying he knew where banos were. He walked me around into the maze of alleys of shops, all closed, their metal doors all shut, took me to a dark corner and suggested I pee right in front of a shop's door. Of course I would never do such foul things, soiling someone's front door. I got really angry, told the guy to kiss my ass. Just then a guy in Muni Policia uniform pedaled in on a bicycle. Not sure he was real policia but I was being set up for a bust and extortion. I got really mad swearing at the guy, walked out to the dark, leafy area near the park and relieved myself. Could have been a hassle with these crooks and fake polciia.

So it pays not to do anything illegal anywhere, anything you would not want someone else do to you, or anything against your conscience.
