If you want a fiesta Cinco de Mayo celebration stay in San Diego (Old Town to be exact). Cinco de Mayo is not a major holiday in Mexico. Although everyday is a holiday in Zona Norte sex wise! Hehehe

    Bring your passport

I went a couple of weeks ago on a Tuesday. I had my passport and waited in the "ready" line since I figured I had my passport ready. I got up there and the guy sent me back to the regular line, which sucks since it seems like most of those people don't have proper documents. At the suggestion of a guy in line I went through the handicapped line which was much shorter. Still, the crossing seemed quite contentious, lots of sour looks, this guy in front of me got taken away in handcuffs and really delayed things by quite a bit. Took me 1. 5 hours to get through. PITA

Gone without a drivers license or passport

Crossed on a whim one day and realized I left both I'd's in my other wallet. Just walked up to them said I forgot it in my car and they verified my info. Had to meet the Super but only talked to him for 5 mins after verifying my information he let me pass. It happens but I've gone with a buddy of mine who goes down there a few times without any I'd and they sent him through. You have no worries. As past advice, your DL is just as doable to cross back in.

Me: San Diego resident, semi-regular monger in Tijuana (anywhere from 5-10 times per year). I have a regular passport (book) that is current, and that's what I always use when crossing back into ther USA at the border.

Except, as an aside, there was one time a few months ago when I had spent a weekend further down in Baja with a buddy and, when we were sitting in the line to cross back into the USA, I realized I'the forgotten to bring my passport. I initially freaked out, figuring it was going to be a major hassle, but when it came our time to pass thru, I just showed the officer my Calif drivers license, told him I forgot my passport, and he let me thru with no muss no fuss.

At the time I figured I just dodged a bullet and counted my blessings. And since then never again have I forgotten to bring my passport with me when going to Mex.

So here's the situation: last week I decided I'd had enough of the long lines, so I went downtown to the S. D. County building and I applied for a passport card so I can use the Ready Lane. I brought my current (expires 2022) passport book with me, and during the application process they took my passport book away from me (which I hadn't expected them to do) as part of the passport card application process, and they told me I will receive my passport book back, plus my new passport card, in about 4-6 weeks.

So apparently, if you already have a passport book, and you apply for a passport card, you have to temporarily surrender your passport book to Uncle Sam until sends it back to you along with your new passport card.

So as of right now I am passport-less. Except I do have my old expired (in 2012) passport book. It's my old one that I never threw out a few years ago when I renewed it.

I figured. No biggie. I'll just not be able to go to Tijuana until I receive back my current passport book, and my new passport card, in the mail in a few weeks.

Fate had other plans. Just got a call from a buddy in L. A. Who's going to be in town Wednesday, and wants to hit up Zona Norte, but doesn't want to fly solo. And, as an enticement for my accompaniment, has offered to treat me to a round or two with HK or Adelita's finest (plus all I can drink and eat). Hell, that's an offer I can't refuse!

What should I do? My options are:

    1) Don't take the chance. Don't go.

    2) Take just my CA drivers license and show that to the agent when crossing back over, and tell the truth. That my current passport book was submitted with my application for passport card and I haven't gotten it back yet.

    3) Take my expired passport book and show that to the agent when crossing back over, and tell the truth. That my current passport book was submitted with my application for passport card and I haven't gotten it back yet. But here's my old passport.

    4) Any other options? I don't want to spin any tall tales because I suspect they can look up in their super-duper computer system that I have a passport book and I'm currently in application process for passport card. I suspect they can also look up my border-crossing history and see I'm semi-regular.

I don't want to miss out on a free afternoon of fine ladies, but on the other hand, I don't want to spend 24 hours sweating it out in secondary inspection, wondering if I'll ever be allowed back into my own country again! All thoughts / advice welcome. In return, I'll owe a trip report. Thanks guys!

They would have accepted the old passport book for the card application, after verifying that you had a current one. Trust me, I have done that, twice. The people wanted a birth. Cert, or current passbook, but I showed them the instructions for the card app, it says an expired book can be submitted after the agency verifies you have a current book. Read the instructions, it is very clear on that.

But don't wait, just go as you did before, the state department told CBP that they cannot refuse entry to an American citizen. If you want to be on the safe side carry birth cert and a DL.

Thanks for the response, makes sense. It turns out we didn't go today after all. My buddy had an old tree blow over in his yard due to today's high winds (Santa Ana's) and got stuck at home on the clean-up, so we pushed it back one week to hopefully next Wednesday. Will report then.
