Forgive me if this is a bit long-winded but I could use a bit of advice from you learned gentlemen about whether or not I should head into Tijuana tomorrow.

Me: San Diego resident, semi-regular monger in Tijuana (anywhere from 5-10 times per year). I have a regular passport (book) that is current, and that's what I always use when crossing back into ther USA at the border.

Except, as an aside, there was one time a few months ago when I had spent a weekend further down in Baja with a buddy and, when we were sitting in the line to cross back into the USA, I realized I'the forgotten to bring my passport. I initially freaked out, figuring it was going to be a major hassle, but when it came our time to pass thru, I just showed the officer my Calif drivers license, told him I forgot my passport, and he let me thru with no muss no fuss.

At the time I figured I just dodged a bullet and counted my blessings. And since then never again have I forgotten to bring my passport with me when going to Mex.

So here's the situation: last week I decided I'd had enough of the long lines, so I went downtown to the S. D. County building and I applied for a passport card so I can use the Ready Lane. I brought my current (expires 2022) passport book with me, and during the application process they took my passport book away from me (which I hadn't expected them to do) as part of the passport card application process, and they told me I will receive my passport book back, plus my new passport card, in about 4-6 weeks.

So apparently, if you already have a passport book, and you apply for a passport card, you have to temporarily surrender your passport book to Uncle Sam until sends it back to you along with your new passport card.

So as of right now I am passport-less. Except I do have my old expired (in 2012) passport book. It's my old one that I never threw out a few years ago when I renewed it.

I figured. No biggie. I'll just not be able to go to Tijuana until I receive back my current passport book, and my new passport card, in the mail in a few weeks.

Fate had other plans. Just got a call from a buddy in L. A. Who's going to be in town Wednesday, and wants to hit up Zona Norte, but doesn't want to fly solo. And, as an enticement for my accompaniment, has offered to treat me to a round or two with HK or Adelita's finest (plus all I can drink and eat). Hell, that's an offer I can't refuse!

What should I do? My options are:

1) Don't take the chance. Don't go.

2) Take just my CA drivers license and show that to the agent when crossing back over, and tell the truth. That my current passport book was submitted with my application for passport card and I haven't gotten it back yet.

Show your old Passbook. Your info is updated on file in the Computer. Just sat the tsa has your passport. Did they give you a receipt for your transactions? Bring it. You will be fine.

I would check the Rodeway Inn in San Ysidro. It looks to be about the nicest motel in San Ysidro from the outside. When I went past there last week they had a banner hanging down advertising I think something like $49 for week nights not sure about weekends. It might be a special rate so if you get quoted anything else ask them about the banner you saw on the building. Its also a short walk to the border.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Been traveling to Tijuana and back many many times over the past few years, and I've noticed a few common mistakes rookies like myself and seasoned pros tend to do every now and then. So I've decided to post some of the things I've learned in my years both on and off the track.

1. Don't bring anything you're not willing to lose. A cell phone? No problem. Most of the girls probably have better phones than yours, and stealing amongst girls is rampant. Your family heirloom necklace your mom gave you on your christening? That should stay home. Most meseros are."honest", but all it takes is one crooked one to ruin your trip. Keep your wits about you, and don't flash anything that would tempt someone to do something stupid.

2. Take care of yourself. When the season get warm, you get sweaty. If you get offended by a girl who's crotch smells like dirty pennies (or worse, like the outhouse door of a tuna boat) , don't be a double standard because she's not as enthusiastic giving you a BJ with your sweaty, vinegary balls.
