I am an experienced monger (SE Asia, Latin America, Africa etc) and I was doing some work in SD and thought it might be nice to revisit AB and see if the quality had improved since my last visit probably 8 years ago.

First off I would have to disagree with those who say that going to TJ is not a foreign country experience. I think crossing that border, especially on foot is about the most jarring border crossing anywhere in the world and equivalent to crossing from HK into China in the old days. That is part of the adventure/fun of TJ is that you are dropping into a place where everyone speaks a different language and the locals wear different clothes and often cowboy hats and there is a lot of dirt, poverty and general 3rd world squalor. OK there are places in LA that might superficially have a resemblance but TJ is unique in that you are in suburban San Diego one minute and then into the TJ scene in another minute.

Anyway, I headed to HK club first. I have to agree with the other posters who say that the attitude there is lacking as well as the quality. It was fun to be there on a night when the chicas outnumber the guys 20 to 1 but maybe 1 or 2 where in the acceptable category. Most were the typical overweight, big ass variety so beloved by the local guys. Lets face it there are a lot more local guys there than gringos so the market probably is just meeting demand. Most Mexican guys like a big ass and what I would consider a chubby body. The weird thing is if you watch Mex TV they have these amazing Playboy model slim chicas. Need a few more in TJ. The best thing about HK was the jacuzzi bubble bath and the blond dancer on the cat walk who was cranking. At a distance she looked very hot.

Bought a few drinks for myself and a girl, but decided to do the alley run out back. Could not find the one morena I had seen on arrival. But several who could qualify. But decided to go to ABs to check it out. Much improved. There were several slim chicas of reasonable quality but despite drinks and encouragement could not get the price down to what I thought would be reasonable for the quality.

So I went to the nearby massage place and got a sweet girl with long balck hair from Veracruz who had no clue how to massage at all. So I ended up massaging her prior to FS. She gave me an extra hour in return for the massage.

Bottom line TJ is still a fun convenient place to enjoy a different atmosphere and there are a few jewels in the rough. Anyone who does these chicks without a condom or even does uncovered anything in any orifice is really asking for trouble. Chlamydia, syphilis and herpes are easily transferred orally.

I've mongered in Brazil, China, Philippines, Spain and elsewhere... but I've never traveled to Mexico. As I expect to be in San Diego on business a few weeks from now, I'm thinking of a taking little side trip. Would you please offer some advice and/or suggestions?

1) If I have more than 1-2 nights available, should I consider some destination beyond TJ? If so, where?

2) In TJ, where should I stay? (Considering: low budget, safety, access to the local ladies, and transportation convenience.)

3) Anything/place in particular that I should avoid? (I'm looking for a fun relaxing time on a budget... not a wild drunken brawl, a night in jail, or a chance to get ripped off.)

My general thought is to leave most of my stuff in a rental car parked in San Diego and then take the trolley to the border. Once across the border, I'd pick up a map of TJ, check into a hotel and then go explore. I'm a bit of a cheapskate and generally try to travel as a local would... so I'm not interested in high-end glitzy entertainment or accommodations... and I certainly don't want to overpay for the pleasure of female company.

1. If you have a few nights you could visit Ensenada. It's a short bus ride down the coast. No great shakes, but a slightly more laid-back atmosphere than TJ. That'd be good for a night or two, no more. Lots of other places in Baja, but you'd need more time and would probably have to fly.

2. Low budget digs in TJ are fairly plentiful. Several up and down La Revu, clean, comfortable but usually very noisy until about 3am. La Espana is OK, Nelson is good for the "experience" of an ancient hotel, and hoping the floors don't collapse! Villa Zaragoza is off Revu a bit, behind the Jai Alai fronton, so it's quieter.

3. Just don't get drunk and obnoxious and you'll be fine. Dont wander much outside the zona (walking from Revu to the zona down Constitucion is OK), dont go anywhere with a street tout, don't carry ANY pills, if searched always keep your money in your hand.

No point in me going to TJ for gas. I'd lose half of it returning back to L.A.

I think those federalis busting down Adelitas are only doing it to make themselves look like they are actually doing something. I'm sure they know they won't find anything at the Zona Roja bars. But hey if they have the power to raid a bar full of hot chicks, I'd be doing the same. They're not going to raid the real drug trafficking places and end up in a gun fight and lose lives. So this is why they raid zona bars, make themselves look like they are working and have the pleasure of gawking at all the chicas.

One of my gals at AB told me the other night that the Federali's come in AS CLIENTS. Usually in the morning hours she said. She also said that is also when most of the narco guys come in-although she said that they account for a small portion of the clientele. Daytime and early evening is the safest time out there. After that, take them back to your hotel and get the hell of of the area. No point in taking the chance of being ANYWHERE when it is more likely to be raided.

I took up Country John's suggestions and tried out Las Pulgas club, a civilian disco club on Revolution.

I was ogling and contemplating my moves on some of the sweetest-looking civilian chicas on the dance floors when the Federales swooped in wearing their black unforms and face masks, aimed their machine guns, stopped the music and checked out ID's of hundreds of people in the club. Needless to say, the chicas and chicos were all pissed off.

They did arrest 2 tough-looking older guys apparently had oustanding warrants. So my take is that the Federales are just not screwing around for nothing. I just hope the Mexican government can manage to clean up the crime, violence and corruption so the people will have a better life. We just cannot give up our fight against evils.

BTW, many chicas in Las Pulgas, including some very good looking young ones, were giving me the eyes before the Federales screwed it up. I suggest that after draining your balls on Coahuila, the bros should try to pick up the civilian chicas in the clubs on Revolution. It would be a a lot of fun.

Yes, the civillian pool of chicas is waiting for the right guys. In my travels in the civilian world in Baja, I get the big eyes all the time from civilians. Many Zona girls go there off duty, so look closely, you might recognize a few.

Yes, contrary to what many people believe, the federales are very serious guys and they ARE having an impact. So far they've removed thousand of fire arms from the street and they should be recognized for that. Mexico DF realizes that the hospitality industry in Baja is a nerve center that can affect commerce and good will everywhere. The world community has been getting the message for many years that Mexico doesn't care and that corruption makes the beast that cannot be tamed.

They busted a Baptism ceremony where they got 60 bad guys, members of the Felix cartel. Got lots of guns, ammo etc.

So this little trick at Las pulgas was intended to send a message to the bad guys that there is no safe place for them anymore, and the message to the good guys is that the federales are working ont he problem, so give them a chance.

I think TJ will clean up easier than Culiacan or Veracruz. The bad guys can't flee North in Baja.

I see positive changes in Tijuana. I am glad I am here. I can't wait until the Via Rapida is finished.

So Las Pulgas is happening and also El Torito (my new spot) is also very nice on Saturdays. It gets busy late (arounf 11 or 12) and the pussy is outstanding, not as much as Las Pulgas, but it should be no problem to hook up there.

Lesson? Sheesh.... just dress smart (not like a tourist), leave the Bernmuda shorts, baseball cap and t shirt home. If you look good, then the girls will want it (because they think you have money).

Nice Story FjordFan. That sucks though, I try being friendly with a lot of the chicas so I can try to get them to go eat with me or something. Basically so I can see them outside of the Zona but none ever budge. One that I frequent, I convinced her to give me her phone number so that we can arrange to spend some time together on one of her days off, but anytime I call her, she seems distracted and looking for anyway to cut the conversation short. Then when I see her at the bar, she's like "Why don't you call or text me?" Of course I text'd her once but she never replied. In the past 2 years around 15 SG and BG have married or hooked up with Federales and Policias . Those federales and placas(policias) in the Zona are meeting the chicas and one things leads to another. They don't spend a penny to fuk them. :}

During the week thousands of tijuana residents walk across the border to their jobs in San Diego so you got caught up in the am rush hour.

Make sure you have proper ID and paperwork if you are a foreign national trying to return to the US. I've had friends have trouble getting back after going to TJ for the day. They got back, but not after a lot of hassle and time.

Just to confirm: I am European, and have a full 10 years US visa. I therefore entered the US in LA on a visa based entry, not through the ususal visa waiver scheme used by most Europeans. My visa is on my "old" passport, but the white entry paper was on my "new" passport.

When trying to get back to the US I presented my "normal" (i.e current )passport, which included my white admission paper, I was asked where was my visa? Damned, I left the "old" passport with the visa at the hotel in SD. I was sent bakc to the main office and was told that I had to get the passport with the visa.. I asked to talk to the manager of the Immigration office, and was introduced to a very civilised man,who said that he could not let me go without seeing the visa, but calmed me down saying that this happened all the time and that I could use his phone to call my hotel. To cut a rather long ( more than 2 hours) story short, I called the hotel (luckily a top market 5 star hotel), they found my passport in my room, and sent a limo to the border. My friendly officer went to collect the passport himself, and then brought me back to the driver, who took me back to SD, free of charge..

At the end, everything was Ok, but if I had been staying in LA, it would have taken a few more hours, and if I had been in a crappy hotel, I don't know what would have happened....And if I had to aks friends or family, i would have found it difficult to explain what I was doing in
