I’m finally getting a chance to write this report. About 3 weekends ago I made one of my mix business with pleasure west coast trips. The pleasure part started on Friday when my plane landed in San Diego about 6pm. I was across the border and cruising the alley by 7. For the newbie trying to explore the area I really recommend Brockton O'Toole's TJ Guide listed it the TJ section of this forum. It will give you the best overall snapshot of the territory. My personal rules are never get to drunk, don’t carry any weapons or drugs, legal or illegal, and that includes any prescription medicine either brought from back home or at one of their pharmacies, and never stray to far from the Zona at night. A good rule of thumb is if you’re not in front of Adelita Bar or Chicago Club, or you don’t see a string of SGs lined up, you’re probably in the wrong place. There are some exceptions but until you get to know you way around TJ its best stay on the heavily traveled paths.

Bottom line: never take a Yellow Cab, period. Because their notorious for not taking you where you want to go, developing a case of sudden amnesia and pretending not to know a word of english. The only time you take a Yellow Taxi Cab is when you're going back to the border and heading home. Otherwise stay away from Yellow Taxi Cabs.

We take Yellow Cabs every time we go (weekly) and have never had a problem with them. Perhaps it is because when we talk to them (mainly in English because my amigo doesn't speak much Spanish) it is clear that we go a lot and know all the places so we won't be fooled by a switch.

One can greatly minimize cab problems with a few easy things. I don't recall every having a problem with a yellow cab.

First, speak to them in Spanish. My Spanish is very weak, but it gets the job done. Anybody can learn a couple of basic phrases, like take me here, please, thank you, etc.

Second, always sit in the front. It throws them off a bit, as youicome off as somebody who's been riding in Mexican cabs for years.

Third, I almost never ask to be taken directly to the bar. I always ask to be taken to the Hotel Nelson. This confuses them a bit, as you might not be a sex tourist, you might really be meeting a friend there. So, no bait and switch. The zona is a 3 minute walk from Nelson, and you get to chat with the SGs along the way.
