But I applied for renewal late last year when processing times got back closer to normal and had the renewed passport back in time for my next trip. So maybe if you don't plan on going back for a long time, try to re-apply right after you come back from this trip. Worst case, if you really want to go to Tijuana during the processing time, take your driver's license, explain that your passport is in the process of being renewed (which is actually the truth), and just pay the bribe. They'll still let you in from what I've heard.

Well everything blew up price wise in Tijuana maybe 6 months before covid and has continued to increase about 15 to 30% a year, depending on what you are talking about. From VIP card, 6 month visitor pass fees into Mexico, hotel Cascadas prices, decreased discounts with VIP card, lap dance increased couple dollars, hotels on revolution increased. You should be fine. They're just going to give you crap about it not being current. I know someone who regularly crosses between Tijuana and San Diego with a very expired passport, and just gets a bit of extra hassle. You'll probably be asked for extra ID, so just make sure your Driver's License is one of those that meets the Federal Requirements. Attempt to eliminate the amount of things they can give you crap about, and don't get pissy with them, and they'll let you through.

The rules would be the same as the last time you crossed. Technically you're not allowed to cross the border with an expired passport but Mexican customs pretty much always lets you cross with a $20/$30 bribe. It seems you were somehow able to cross the last time without paying anything so would just try the same strategy you tried the last time and see what happens. Am very surprised they let you cross the last time without paying a bribe but maybe they're getting more lax on that or maybe you just got lucky and crossed at the right time I don't know. But your worst case scenario is you'll just have to pay a bribe. Wouldn't worry about not getting in.

Technically, the passport is also supposed to be valid (non-expired) coming back into the USA But my experience there (having crossed twice with a recently expired passport last year during the height of COVID) is that USA Customs doesn't care if the passport is expired. They just scan it and let you through most of the time without saying anything. There is a chance USA Customs sends you to secondary though.
