Consistency has never been the norm going thru Mexico customs in the past so can't see why that would change now. Sometimes they wanted me to fill out a FMM, other times they just waved me past, most of the time they asked for my ID but sometimes I just walked right thru and they didn't ask for it.

Yet again, you and I have exactly opposite experiences. And I'm not disputing some may be strong armed into $30. However, each of the last three weekends, I walked into Mexico, with a large suitcase. When they asked where I was going, I said Tijuana. Once I was waved through without completing the FMM. The other two times, I was asked how long. 3 days. Filled out the FMM and walked in. No mention of $30. So your comment about gringos unlikely given the option of the 7-day FMM, like so many other of your contributions, are just fiction.

As for that $30, I do believe that it's a quasi scam. Not sure if the agent receives a kickback. But the problem is the law is not on our side. With the border technically shut to normal traffic, Mexico has even more authority to turn us away. Pre-Covid, I think we could press the argument more, and win. But right now, it is just much easier for them to deny entry.

My speculation is that if they confiscated them from people leaving, and forced everybody to get a new one, it would just consume far too much manpower. So, you don't have to surrender it when exiting from Tijuana. I have no idea what their policy is at other land crossings. If guys can't afford $30, every six months, I think it's time to find a cheaper hobby.

That's correct the 7 day pass, mexico wouldn't let me use it a 2 and time 2 days later, that was 7 months ago. And to clarify anyone going to mexico now likely will not be given the option for the free pass that goes from 1 hour up till 7 days. I've seen it 1st hand while sitting in their office. Guys arguing they just bought a 6 month pass 3 days ago but left it home. Mexico would not let him in without paying the 30 dollars again. I suppose if you go with no bags and say you are going to the dentist and can verify it, maybe you have a chance. But they know gringos are coming daily, just counting white, black, Asian, and Arab, probably 100 to 300 still crossing by foot per day at the border for zona norte. At one time I believed clammy knew what he was talking about. But to tell you the truth I think your only options are to get the free 7 day FMM or purchase the 180 day. If you were to ask they tell you the 7 day is for one time use. And the 180 day you can use for multiple reentries during the 180 day time frame. While technically not true that's the way it works as far as walking into Mexico. I have never heard of a 30 day FMM.

That was a error on my part, obviously I meant 180 days, not 30. Everybody knows there are only two options for the FMM.
