Yes you are correct. You get free transfer with bus & trolley'2 for 2 hours.

You get no transfers and would have to pay again ONLY if you're paying in cash. With the Ponto card you do get free transfers every two hours (as noted in the link above). To my understanding, the transfer rule with the Pronto card also applies to transferring between bus and trolley so the entire one-way trip would only be $2. 50 (could be mistaken but that's how I've read it).

As far as the Middletown Station stop near the airport rental car center I've never tried that stop. Found it more straightforward to take the 992 into downtown and then transfer to the blue trolley. With that said, I'm supposed to be picking up a rental car in the middle of my trip to San Diego / Tijuana next week so that'll give me the perfect opportunity to check out that route when I go pick my rental car up.

Until the blue line is extended. This method, which I have done in the past, requires shuttle- green-line- blue-line.

The shuttle goes through a depressing prison like road.

Easier is to take bus 992 to American Plaza and then take blue line.

Of course later this month when blue line is extended.

The best way is to download the MTS Pronto app. You get free transfers for 2 hours.

Thats a green line trolley stop then your supposed to pay again to ride the blue line to SY.

Or you can risk it like the homeless and hope the cops don't ask for verification of ticket.

Easier to pay the extra 50 cents for the airport bus 992 directly to America Plaza and the Blue line.
