I've been overpaying for sure, still cheaper than USA.

If walking across, the best places are in the plaza where the trolley stops. They have the best rates around, although, as folks have said, the difference is small unless you're changing a ton of money.

Rule of thumb: buy your pesos in the US and sell them back in Mexico. However as SpeedToys says, the differences are a couple of bucks unless you are exchanging thousands of dollars. If you are exchanging $100, the difference between a 19.65 and a 19.75 rate is 10 pesos, or about 50 cents.

Every exchange / cambio has two numbers displayed. The spread between those numbers is how the shop makes money.

The LOWER number is how many pesos you will get for $1. You want this number to be as HIGH as possible.
The HIGHER number is how many pesos it costs to get $1 back. You want this number to be as LOW as possible.
