I agree that clawing back on the small things is a complicated subject. I've made a few judgements that I regretted immediately or later upon reflection. I think I have thick enough skin to withstand the negative return comments, but yet here I am now, still reflecting on how some went down. I too have occasionally gotten change back from a chica, but more than likely she'll claim to possess no pesos for that. My regulars would be more likely to just ask to convert the change that she owes into "credito" that she expects to escape repaying. Yeah I don't think there's a difference with paying upfront. If the chica is going to be a bad provider nothing is going to change that. For the most part I agree with you SMD on the getting back change topic. Is a complicated subject. One time at AB I asked the DJ guy for two Spanish songs which was 6 bucks for both. Time went on and he didn't put my songs. My buddies were getting restless and wanted to leave. So I go to the current mic big guy and tell him that dude hasn't put any of my songs and I'm leaving. He goes over there, gives me my money back, and apologizes. Ever since then mic guy has shaken my hand when he sees me. I see it like a form of respect that I stood up.

The more complicated part is when chicas are involved. Like I said chicas have helped me get my change back from the front desk people. I think part of the reason they do it is cause a deal is a deal. Same reason I wanted my money back in the AB example. But yeah some are quick to call you stingy cause you didn't give them enough or a tip. Chicas want to do this thing where they want to guilt you into giving them more. I enjoy sharing these topics in discussion with you GQ. We've always been open and honest with each other, and the few times that we've disagreed with the other, it has always been a civil, respectful discord. When I first joined this board many years ago, I frequently corrected another prolific poster, and he took exception and was angered when I tried to correct him in order to benefit the other readers of this board.

As for paying up front, we probably are in complete agreement. I never say or discuss 'mi paga desputes' as a part of my negotiation. Consequently, when the chica and I reach the room, if she asked for payment up front, I reach into my pocket and hand her the dinero up front. Occasionally even with a smile. But then I negotiate some really small fees or simply walk away. I agree with you GQ, that it sometimes might not seem to be good to argue over small amounts of change. However my personal experience (and what I have observed) has taught me over the years that Tijuana residents look at gringos differently than our peers and service personnel in the United States about issues like negotiation and getting back change. In the States addressing the 'small things' are more likely to have you viewed upon as being stingy, petty, and ridiculously cheap. But expressing those same concerns in Tijuana are more likely to get you being viewed as being strong or smart. Sure chicas have called me cheap (coto) a few times during negotiations, but the ones that do have likely been trained or exposed to understand American cultural differences.

I agree that getting enough small peso notes when visiting Tijuana can sometimes be a challenge. The techniques I use are as follows:

I get most of my pesos at ATMs using a Charles Schwab debit card. Instead of requesting 7,000 pesos or 10,000 pesos, I typically request 6,950, or 6,970 or 9,950 peso withdrawals. I buy from the busy taco stands with 200 peso notes, even 500 peso notes at the big cart near HK. I always get back change at the sit-down restaurants (which I am a regular at. Mostly Chinese food places). It is also not unusual for me to go to a number of cambio exchanges in Tijuana and exchange one $10 bill at a time into pesos.
