    100 Pesos

Great advice dude. Especially of she's only 16. Yeah, we need alot more people like you on this board. Reckless, careless and cheap. Just what we need around here. A hundred pesons isn't even two bucks!! You must be hanging with some real stunners.

The truth about negotiating in the DR is that once you speak the language and do not act like a tourista and you are genuine and nice with a little sence opf humor and a dont take me for a ride attitude (normally refered to as "Tigre") the price drops by 50%. I have noticed that. I have been there enough times to know.
I just came back from 3 weeks in the DR and will be going back there again in another 2 weeks.

    Sosua report: Part 2

The Plaza Europa is the default hotel in Sosua that I'd always read about on both mongering boards and DR1. It's definitely in the middle of the action and it's competently managed. Very large rooms with full kitchenette facilities. Good if noisy AC that you control completely. At Casa Marina for example and at many other AI's (as well as some smaller hotels) they have a wall slot you have to place your key card in to make the AC work. It prevents you from leaving the AC on when you are out of the room. At the Casa Marina at least, the AC kicks out whenever the power fluctuates or the planta has to come on line. That means you often wake up without AC and have to get up and reset it. Not that I want to leave the AC on all the time but it is a nice luxury sometimes to be able to return to a pleasantly cool room.

In five days I never heard other guests in their rooms or had any problems. The hotel provides alarm clocks but without battery back-up and as the power will frequently go out briefly at night it will always be flashing 12:00. They also have phones in the rooms and will do wake-up calls so it doesn't matter much.

I took advantage of the fridge and microwave and went to the playero supermarket when I got in. It really is a major convenience to me not to have to go out to eat all the time as much because service is so slow as anything. I also bought a fifth of Brugal Anejo at the super super - about RD$200 I think. It was more than half full when I left so it went with my tips and presents for the maid. Beer is definitely no longer cheap here and my frugal mongering instincts rebel at paying as much for a few beers as I know I could potentially pay for a decent campo chica.

Walking out of the lobby if you turn left on Pedro C. you pass a moto rental, a bank ATM, an outdoor chicken place, and a small grocery market (bigger than a colmado) before seeing a big strip/massage place [which I already forgot the name of] on the other side of the street and a block past it La Passion massage. The chicken place is so informal looking I thought at first it was a sort of family picnic shelter. It's not and it provides good cheap grilled chicken. Past La Passion there is very little of interest for a long way on Pedro C. all the way to High Carribean.

La Passion is a fun well run business. Decent looking chicas - I'd be willing to do any of them, pleasant bar and not much pressure. Lots of funny signs about blow jobs. RD$1000 straight pricing for an Ok attempt at a massage, a decent tease and some OK preliminary head followed by a mostly hand job to completion. The chica I picked had a very nice set of tetas which she dangled and moved very pleasantly while massaging my chest and stomach from above my head. If I was a regular I think I would follow the lead of some posters here and get more directive offering a small propina of 200-300 for oral I'd consider better -including CIM which was not included automatically.

I like Sosua enough that I keep thinking about how I would do things if I lived here. La Passions wouldn't be all that frequent a stop for me but I'd do it on occasion for convenience like McDonalds.

La Passions isn't all that flashy. Actually I think I stopped and had a few beers there in 2004 and talked to a german guy for at least an hour without ever noticing that they even did massages or BJs or were that place with a lot of stuff on the internet. The place closer to europa just down from passions is much more obviously a sex industry joint. It has signs claiming strippers and massages. It just seemed too much of a flashy rip off - though to be fair the one time I walked right past it I had just been pretty thoroughly drained of leche by the young masseuse at La Passion.

Turn right out of the lobby and you hit the famous Domino's/Four Roses bars right across the side street. Friendly popular places that seem hard to not to become a regular at. Great for watching the street scene flow past.

I really got to like one of the bartenders and tried to pay her salida on my last day but she said the new owner doesn't let them leave. I was shocked. This was a breach of customary practice! She was very happy to get together after work but this was a friday and that was after 2am and I had to get up about 5:30 to catch the bus back to SD so too bad. If I was in the situation again I'd just have her come over after work and sleep until then but I was a bit nervous about pulling off my big travel day since I'd never done quite a few of the elements.

As it turns out I was too conservative about it. It's not that hard to take Carribe tours back to SD and a taxi to the airport in time for an afternoon flight at Las Americas. The desk will call a taxi, the taxi takes 5 minutes. There are people there even at 6am in the dark. It is a bit weird to get off by the side of the road in almost total darkness with all of your luggage and try to figure out what to do next. Even though it was blacked out, there is a little station right there. There was a ticket window with a clerk who had a candle and a pen and filled out my ticket. There was a waiting room with seats but it seemed a bit stuffy so I sat on my bag outside with some other people. I was too conservative. The buses really are on schedule.

Earlier in the week I had booked a deep sea fishing excursion with one of the tour companies (they all seem to offer the same tours) and the hotel pick-up missed me. They called the hotel desk after a while and I agreed to catch a cab to Puerto Plata to meet the boat. The taxi I got had just been sitting outside across the street for a very long time. I'd thought of taxi's as expensive - as they are for direct trips like the one I took to PP - 1000 pesos , $30, which is half of what the whole fishing trip cost and that included beer/sandwiches and hotel pickup and delivery. Talking to the taxi driver on the way I asked what he'd charge to drive around locally for say 6 or 8 hours - Sosua, caberete, Monte llano, on a fee plus gas basis. He though about it and said RD$500. I was surprised. It made sense though. As I mentioned, I'd noticed him sitting around outside for a very long time. I think he was there from 8am until 1pm when we left without a fare. If I could give him a profit of 500 after gas that was worthwhile. His time sitting around or guideservices were not costly. In the future I'll try to negotiate car with driver services from taxis. It wouldn't cost much more than a rental car and doesn't have the liability issues. In time I'd have a couple of phone numbers of taxi's for all day lease. It seems a bit odd but taxi's for specific jaunts are quite expensive but taxi's hired to sit around and wait on you all day dedicated to your sole use could be cheap. I suspect the same economic logic applies to pussy.

    Welcome to the DR

Talk about hitting a nail on the head!

Marc you have discovered the "Dominican" mindset. It takes a bit to get your head around it, especially if you are from a first world country. The mental games that go on in the locals minds as well as the Domincan experience are written out in your report.

    Great post!

Sosua Report and thoughts on chica negotiating

I was in sosua in the middle of February arriving on a Caribe tours bus from SD. My first learning experience was that the Caribe bus drops you off at the side of the road next to a wall on the main highway. As soon as I got my bag out of the bus a motoconcho was there to help me with it. I'd really intended to take a taxi but I was boxed in there and couldn't see any taxis (or anything else) so I said OK. He balances my 45lbs duffle bag in front of himself and off we go into rush hour traffic on the main highway. After a pleasant quiet 4 hour bus ride that last 5 minutes of terror really lets you know you've arrived. As it turns out the Carribe tours station is accross the street and you can get a taxi there (though I'd pay the 20 peso moto fare just for the guy to transport my bag accross the street in rush hour).

I checked in at the Europa and got the 5 minute course on reprogramming the room safe while I was still praising all the gods for letting me survive the motoconcho ride. It seemed like a sort of Fear Factor IQ test. I barely passed, got to the room, reprogrammed the safe, stowed my gear and chilled.

I had made it to the the center of what had been called "the holy city".

It was near sunset and I took a walk down pedro clisante to the beach. I was fresh meat in this town and the couple of town crack ho's, as well as all the street venders had to take a shot. Much like Boca chica there seem to be people who specialize in fresh foreigners of a certain language. Neither BC or Sosua are dominated by Americans and it takes folks a while to figure out what you are. For those interested in very low end chicas, I had a couple follow me for a block or two rapidly bidding themselves down to 300 pesos. One of them seemed to recover and think maybe she was scaring me off with too low a price and she began to insist that usually she would charge more and she meant that this was just for a BJ.

I've been back for a couple weeks and reread the board and gave some thouight to negotiating in the DR. This really is a more libertarian sort of culture than the US. Negotiation is a much bigger part of life. Everybody has some kind of hustle going all around U. I think that's one reason why so many people think more about going into business here- even when they gave it little thought back home. Another feature is failure. The first world covers up failure better. It seems OK to fail here. Try again. No Biggie. This leads me to thoughts about negotiating for chicas. I read about it but it seemed so unnatural. But then so does negotiating with a taxi or a manicurist. I was puzzled by what the "real" price of chicas was. Getting it through my head that the price of anything here is fluid has taken me some time and effort. Here goes a take a the price of chicas.

The price any chica is willing to take. The market clearing price for her at time t, depends on her mood, her needs and her expectations for earnings otherwise. Most chicas will take a lot less early in the day or late. Early they can be out again and have a shot at making more. Late they are risking making nothing if they reject the offer. This is definitely a buyers market. Most chicas in Sosua will not get even one man on any given day. This is not like some street walker in the Bronx who turns a dozen tricks a day. On the other hand most have had the addictive experience of asking a guy for 3000 pesos and having him just say. OK. It's a memory I'm sure like a slot machine flashing and ringing and all that dinero clanging down in the tray.

Early in the evening I was walking down Pedro see. And got approached by a little fire plug of a chica who was in the company of a tall slender chica I thought was amazing. By this time I'd overcome my sense of politeness enough to straight out say sorry I have no interest in you but your amiga is beautiful. Cool, the fireplug starts negotiating for her friend (who helps a bit too). She wants 3000 pesos. This seems very high to me. It's very early in the evening. Would I buy them a drink? Sure. 2500 pesos. I really would just like to look around and not jump into this. 2000 pesos. Where is your hotel? Europa. A bit of a problema. She hasn't got her cedula. She left it at home in Santo Domingo. Lo Siento. No cedula. No hotel. Wait! She can go with you to the Calypso. Only 300 pesos. Sorry. I was at this point totally backing out because I don't know where Calypso is.even though I've read about it on the board before, and I'm picturing another motoconcho thrill ride down the main highway but his time in the dark, plus I have no idea if this chica is actually over 18. She claims to be 19. I know plenty of 14 year olds who look 19. So I'm shaking my head. 1500 pesos. Total. 1200 for us, 300 for the hotel. Sorry, I can't be sure she's 18. 1300. 1000 pesos for us. I smile. Thank them for their time, and walk out. OK. 1000 pesos total.

I managed to bargain them down from 3000 to 1000 (including hotel) without actually bargaining. Just being my genuine noncommital bashful hesitant self. That plus my firm decision that I wouldn't take a chica who had no ID. In retrospect I realize that this sort of bargaining is brute force. Just refusing the sale but letting the selling keep making offers. I remember it occurring several times in different contexts.

The next day I saw them again, waved, smiled, they smiled back.

Negotiations begin with the question of who will make an offer first. Later I was trying to get a chica I actually wanted (this one also talking mostly through an amiga). I say what do you want. She says how much are you offering. I say Ummmm. 2000 pesos for ST. My warped brain thinking something like. Well that's actually better than they expect to get so it should do it. It actually does kind of stun them a bit. They hesitate and talk. Then one comes back with no, thats not good enough. I say how much? They say. Hesitantly, ahhh 2500? I say OK, 2500.

Reviewing the mental game tape I of course realize what went on. They open with asking me to make the initial bid. It should have been something like 500, but with a smile and an agreement that of course they are worth more but I'm not a rich man. Instead I say 2000. They think, holy shit! The crazy gringo is actually offering us twice what we really hope to get on his first bid! They go into a huddle. If the gringo is this batshit crazy he may do anything but we can't lose him. Still if that's his first bid we've just got to try for more but hey just a little more because we can't let him get away.

As it turned out that chica and another chica that I over-paid both were very worthwhile experiences. The good experience however was despite overpaying rather than because of it. My sense is that the botched negotiation actually started the connection with the chica off on the wrong foot. The fact that I'm a nice guy, I work hard at the language, I try to please the chica in bed, I'm respectful etc eventually turns the chica around but she starts off thinking. What a fool this guy is. I've come to think that if you like a chica you bargain hard- but politely and pleasantly. You show her you are no fool and you are in control. Later if appropriate you show her generosity by your own choice and based on her deserving it.

She says how much are you offering? You give a number. If it's early or late rather than prime time, I think 500 or 600 is good to start. Why? It's half what a decent price should be and thats what's expected. You're communicating that you're willing to spend 1000 to 1200. I had to overcome my initial embarassment at an offer so low. Because it may provoke a show of rejection. It should. Derisive laughter. A toss of the pretty mane of hair. No that's not enough. Well how much would you find sufficient? She's still talking, the negotiation is on. Now she's got to name a number. She doesn't want to go too high since you low balled the opening bid it would just signal that you really are very far apart. 2500? That puts the mid point. You double, she halves- a bit over un mil where you expected.

The thing I had to get past is that at least in Sosua or the main DR mongering areas this is an everyday market transaction. It's not illegal or embarassing or hidden in itself. Participants do want to hide the details of their transactions for the same reason that bids are typically very privelidged information in the US. It's not in the least bit secret that you are taking or giving bids though the details of the bids themselves are quite secret. Similarly chicas are entirely open about the fact of the negotiation. Though they often don't want others to hear the details.

    Sosua Trip

I was in sosua from February 3 till March 3 and I had a great time over all. I stayed at the hotel voramar which is an excellent monger hotel right next to the casino in sosua at the far end of pedro clisante.

Afternoon action starts round about 3 pm in the pedro clisante and at the beach. Just approach any girl you like and if she is in the game she will let you know. At the beach just take a seat at a bar and you won't be alone for a long time especially during the weekend.

At the beach try bar siempre sol which is number 145 cause its owner hermann knows most of the working girls at the beach and their specialities like rimjobs. At night the action takes place at classicos, sosua life bar or latinos club round about 10 pm. The majority of the girls are very dark girls but there are always some really hot girls around too. Just approach any girl you like and make a deal.

I payed for st between 500 and 1000 pesos and for toda la noche 1500 pesos. Don't be afraid of girls asking for 3000 or 4000 pesos especially close to 1 am when the discos are about to close they usually come down to 1000 or 1500 pesos.

I also liked la passion alot and went there several times and got some phone numbers for dates before or after closing time.

After midnight the salida is 500 pesos and during the day 2500 pesos.

For eating out I went most of the time to baileys restaurant which is right next to the banco popular in the center of sosua or la finja restaurant which is situated on the other hand side of the street.

In total I had 8 girls during my time cause once I found a girl who I liked I kept her for several days, this is more confinient than looking for a different girl every day especially in Sosua.

    I think you get it

    Ponderosa,

I think you understand exactly what I'm saying. What to pay a chica is always a sensitive subject. Just wanted to add some balance to the board(s).

What set me off-- I was reading a post where a guy was asking if the service at La Passions was negoitable because he thinks it cost too much. Then I read an old post about the opening of the Field of Dreams hotels. Some of the Senior members where already complaining that they are not going to pay the $40 per day rate and that they better get some serious discounts or they were going to use thier powers on the forum to bring or not bring them business. This guy had not even seen the hotel or stayed there yet, and he didn't believe the owners deserved the $40 a day they were asking.

I just think these boards need balance.
