Arrived today from blackbeards resort with uber have horrible hangover from last night check in at hotel plaza Europa I get big room with small kitchen from private owner on airbnb here for around 28 dollars per night. I was, of course, referring to spotting a "newbie" at the taxi stand who is asking about fares, and inviting him to share a cab with you, or chatting up a likely suspect while waiting for your baggage, as DH suggested.

Walking away is one of the best negotiating techniques in general. Car salesmen, prostitutes, tour promoters, all of that. But you have to be prepared to keep walking.

Agree 100% but figured my worst case scenario at POP would be to walk back with my tail between my legs and pay the $25. I couldn't see them turning that down. I banked on there being at least one weak one amongst the pack who would break rank to guarantee himself some business at a reasonable rate, instead of holding fast to the cartel rules and going home empty handed.

San José, Costa Rica airport is great for this because you can walk all the way out of it down to where there are regular taxis. Panamá City airport is okay because there is a bus. Iquitos, Perú is a very bad place to try this because there is extreme solidarity among the taxistas and the airport is a long way out of town, and you can get bogged down in the mud. I ended up paying double and getting laughed at, and a lot of mud was involved.

Offering to share cabs with people you meet at baggage claim is good, and you can sometimes get pussy that way.

My first ever trip to the DR I landed in pop and walked out to be met by the taxi mafia quoting $25. If I recall correctly, my Spanish was 0 then. I told them it was too much and started walking away. Two of them chased me, one of which took me for $15. Nice AC minivan with leather seats.

There are more of them than there are passengers needing a ride. $25 is a complete rip off for the distance, let's all stick to our guns and bring it down.

Since the Taxi union won't allow Uber to the airport (LOL) you can look at paying $20-$25 for the trip. As soon as you walk out the airport they will be posted. I have learned in my experience when I arrive just get the first taxi or call an Uber. Having someone picking you up sometime is more time-consuming waiting for them to arrive and find you.

My last trip I kept the number of the Uber driver. I figure I will go back to him without calling Uber. Gave him the time I arrive in everything and his ass was late. After about 15 minutes; I end up calling Uber and had a driver in 4 minutes. He called me 25 minutes later, I was already in Boca Chica smoking and unpacking my Suitcase. I Refused to even answer his call.

I spent 3 nights in the Su and 1 day in Santiago. I stayed in Sosua suites acroos the street from Rockies. It is one of the closest venues to the action. The place is dated but everything works, You get a 1 bedroom apartment for 55 a night. The owner is a great guy who should be supported. You can bring as many women you want as long as they have a cedula.

I rarely make reservations in the Sue. Hotel Europa usually comes in and a clutch. Casa Angela if I have to at the last minute. However if you have concentrated down to just two hotels do you might want to secure your decision.

Going down for two weeks the end of May. Decided to take the advice of the forum (thanks) and will do BC - Sousa - SD or BC. My question now is should be make reservations or not? We need three rooms and are looking at New Garden or Casa Valeria for right after Memorial Day (May 30 Jun 3). Both hotels are showing low availability, with one saying 5 rooms left and the other 3. I am using tripadvisor / expedia. My question is should we reserve rooms or take our changes when we get there? I think I remember seeing there is a discount at one of them for ISG members.
