I told the driver to go slow over a distance of about two miles and safely arrived at my destination, however when getting off the MotoConcho my leg hit the exhaust pipe somehow, and I know have a small burn to deal with as I was wearing shorts. Unless your suited up like a Hockey goalie, MotoConchos should be avoided as anything can happen and it won't be pretty.
Dinner in shorts? Even in Bermuda they put on long pants for dinner engagements, though a well-fitting short pant with belt, knee stockings and leather oxford shoes or docksiders is acceptable for lunch.

You are obviously not used to motor bikes, because watching out for the hot exhaust pipe on the kerb side of the bike is always essential when mounting or dismounting, especially if you are carrying cargo like groceries in both hands.

Suited up like hockey goalie? Not necessary, though it is safer to wear lace-up shoes and not flip flops, because if you do have an accident your bare feet will be very vulnerable in flip flops. Long pants and long sleeves will also provide some protection from road rash should the worst come to the worst.

One tip is to get a moto that has a seat with a small luggage rack behind it. This gives you something to hold onto with one hand behind you. Also check that the foot rests are in decent condition and at the right angle. With two decent foot rests and a hand behind you on the luggage rack, you can form a pretty stable triangle.

I have ridden moto conchos hundreds of times and have never been in an accident. , but they do happen. Usually the worst accidents are not the fault of the motoconcho, but truck drivers with heavy loads and unroadworthy vehicles.

I am glad you made it safe no major accidents with the rain. We know you only ride the Moto Concho for the pure enjoyment of hugging the driver.

    Good warning.

Motos are dangerous but it is a question of risk against convenience. With my daily routine living in Puerto Plata life would be hopelessly inconvenient without them. I must have taken about 7000 rides by now. I have had one accident and was lucky to get off with just a slightly bruised ankle. The driver and his bike came off a lot worse, but it was one of only four or five times out of that 7000 I was not riding with a professional motoconchista, just the puta's "friend" who threw in a lift home as part of the price (a bad bargain, as it turned out).

So, only ride with a registered, jacketed, motoconchista. If they are giving a couple of dozen rides a day a lot of the bad ones get weeded out by natural selection. Most older drivers are quite careful and skilful.

Another tip is to choose a driver with wing mirrors and a helmet. His having a helmet won't help you in a crash, but it usually indicates a more safety-conscious driver. And my favorite driver lost a day's income because he would not work until he had wing-mirrors fixed on his new bike.

Always choose a more mature driver (same reason). The godfather of North Coast mongering always said "You see bold motoconchistas, and you see old motoconchistas, but you never see old, bold motoconchistas". Also the old ones suffer less hormonally from the macho urge to race, compete or cut corners.

Never ride in the rain, and I also avoid riding when the streets are wet, unless I am with one of my panel of three "motoconchistas de confianza" (tried and trusted drivers). If you here long enough, collect numbers of those you find reliable.

Always wear long pants. But any gentleman would wear long pants when out and about in town. It's not the beach, dude!

Never travel along main roads. If I wanted to travel from one end of Cabarete to the other I would take the publico or guagua.

Watch out for that exhaust pipe. Newbie error, dude!

Guys are always warning about motoconchos, and that is fair enough because they are dangerous. But how many of those guys smoke, take drugs, routinely drink more than two units of alcohol a day, occasionally drink excessive amounts of alcohol (more than eight units), practise unprotected sex with strangers, practise "extreme" sports, etc, etc.

If you do any of those things then riding a motoconcho (and taking the same precautions as me) should be well down your list of worries as the death / injury / sickness rate is much lower than from doing any of those things.

By taken the above precautions you can shade the odds to what is acceptable.

Research in many countries over several decades is unanimous in proving that eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day lengthens your life by 5% with associated reduction of illnesses. How many who warn about motos do that? Most of my American friends here seem to live off a diet of fried fat with grease sauce.

It is all about priorities and risk assessment.

Also, thanks for the current reports. Sosua seems best for a weekend. I guess I have to follow the footsteps of some of the experienced vets and really make an effort to explore the different parts in the next few years and only slide through Sosua for a couple days max here and there.
Just came back from Sosua. Stayed at CC for part of my trip.

    WiFi was rock solid.

I agree Sosua is very simple however we all need to step up our game and be prepared for the flexibility on the ground.

I especially liked the Las Terrenas report. That's a great time saver for a potential visitor. Did you fly directly in to the local airport?
No I used Sosua as my base and took the 5 hour gua gua ride which was inexpensive but brutal being squeezed in the gua gua for so long. On a good note it is good to see how Dominicans live and travel.

    As always insighfull

It's an all inclusive hotel, definitely not chica friendly. Unless you register her as a guest (about $70 added to your room bill, per day).

Most other hotels are chica friendly, but Casa Valeria and Terra Linda only allow one chica at a time.

    Are these chica friendly hotels?

    Piergiorgio Palace Hotel?

    Mary Rose Condo Apartments?

    Victorian House?

    Las Margaritas Hotel?

Perla de Sosua Economy Vacation Rental Apartments? What you guys this about this place?

Casa Marina Beach an Amhsa Marina Resort all Inclusive

The WiFi is very strong and consistent at CC. I gave a friend a video tour on Skype of the hotel and some of the "skanks" hanging out in the lobby one day!
