Pretty funny. I was in Rumba earlier this week and some dudes kept doing their frat barking dog sounds. And these dudes looked to be in their 40s or 50s. Pretty easy to distinguish oneself from these types so no biggie.

Something new. Coming in to POP this time, the young guy checking my passport smiled, extended his palm downwards and said in a low voice,"Do you have a present for me?".

He had my passport, so I gave him $5. 00. I didn't need to get into a hassle by complaining to his supervisor, and who knows where that would lead, and how long it would take.

Figured it as just another tax, so I'll leave it a younger more vigilant passenger to do the crusading.

I had the same thing happen to me 2 years ago I just laughed and blew him off and there were no repercussions. Depending on your temperament sometimes it's good to call their bluff.

Several years ago while going through SDQ customs was stamping my passport. The worker mentioned that since I overstayed (at the time one had to pay an overstay tax if they stayed over two weeks [I do not think this is the case anymore]) that I had to pay her $10. This sounded pretty hi so I said I would do so on the condition that she would give me a receipt. She said no so I responded that I would like to talk to her supervisor. She sent me to another desk and they collected the overstay tax and charged me only $5 (with a receipt)! I then went through customs with no problems. I always make it a point of pretending to not know Spanish so it would make it difficult for them to talk to me. Just simple "si" and "no!" If they try to talk to me in English I simply say "no comprendo" and ask loudly to talk to someone who can translate. Making a small ruckus and attracting attention can scare these workers off. In the end most of these dishonest workers prey on the ignorance of tourists.

One thing I learned in wrestling that applies here is "if they catch you the first time shame on them. If they catch you a second time shame on you!" It is a learning experience. They do this for a living while we have to deal with this only on vacation. With some awareness and experience you can keep the hustling down but there is always that one or two hustles that sneak by because, even though experienced, you have never encountered it before (like the wrong person charging me the overstay tax so she could pocket the money) , it is a different take on an old hustle, you were too drunk or distracted to notice (anybody ever get pickpocketed! Sober you are a target. Drunk it is so much easier.) , you felt pity or sorry for someone (give money to kids in the street and before you know it you have kids pestering you) ; fooled by their kindness being your weakness (chica invites you to visit the family, or to a party and before you know it you are paying, or buying all sorts of things for her and others [and they are therefore taking advantage of your kindness]) , you were intimidated (Politur is good at using this to their advantage) , you do not want any problems (screamers will act out in the hotel just to shake you down for more money) , you simply did not know (newbie mistakes) , or you took a chance that you should have known better not to do ("Wow! That girl looks fine but looks young. She ain't go no 'cedula! ' That's okay. I'll take her back to the hotel and just bribe the guard to let her in." If you do not pay her enough what happens-KNOCK KNOCK-"Senor Politur, how did I know she was 14! She looked 105!").

Yes the shake down at the Puerto Plata airport can be quite scary for the people who choose to indulge in things they should not and even for the straight up folks 1st go around. My last flight out they put a new guy on me and all the seasoned employee's just sat back and laughed they did not know I seen them but I did not care. Hell as long as the plane would wait on me I was fine and did not mind the new guy fucking with me a little.

The other night their was a group of very young guys, really boys to be honest, and one dude looked like Prince in the 80's dancing in a "VIP" section of Latinos, he even had his size about 5'4" a buck 20 and we were laughing because they were dancing with each other the entire night with no girls. Can you imagine, your trying to be the man by coming here and at the end of the day your dancing with your buddies. LOL. So many guys come down here with some much planning as to what they are going to be or do trying to be unique, I guess trying to wow a working girl. Everybody has their own way of doing things but it is very entertaining.
