I had a great first trip, going all over the island, into some remote areas, and into Sosua three times during my stay. I never had any problems, was welcomed into people's homes, and had many unique experiences in the countryside. In Sosua, whenever I wanted a girl, there was never a shortage, day or night. Although, you must know at least some Spanish. Thought I'd share a handful of pics from the trip. Out of respect, I won't post face shots, but enjoy these booty shots. I have been living in Puerto Plata for the past 15 years. General consensus among both locals and visitors is that it is significantly cheaper than Sosua. My present apartment costs me US$150 per month (large salon / kitchen, two large bedrooms). Local contacts are best, otherwise cruise the streets looking for 'for rent' signs. If you go through agencies you will pay 50% more.

I already have an expat that lives in Puerto Plata. His connections are telling him that inventory is low and what few decent places that are available are overpriced! I rode around in Puerto Plata and saw very few for rent signs in the places I am looking at!

Thanks for the tip about the waterfall. It appears to be in the center of the country. Did it take you a long time to get there from Sosua?

Yeah, it's in a region of the country called the Cibao. We used the bus system and guaguas to get there. First to Santiago, then la Vega, and finally Jarabacoa. Doing it this way takes about half a day, or you could rent a car and do it in about two hours. Either way you'll want to spend the night in town and venture out in the morning. We stayed at Hotel Jaraba, low price, close to restaurants and grocery stores, and a short walk from the guaguas station.

I was in jarabacoa. Right now it's the low season, didn't see a single tourist. I climbed El Mogote. It's around 5000 feet at the summit. A steep climb near the top. If you go this time of year, you'll have the whole place to yourself. Make sure you bring a lot of water. I also highly recommend checking out Salto jumenoa, that's an incredibly impressive waterfall. These were all done as a series of day trips. Just ask a moto driver about hikes and waterfalls, and they'll hook you up. Great place to take a girl if you hit it off with one.

I already know apartment in Sosua are a rip off. However I was checking in Puerto Plata yesterday. There is low inventory and the are just as overpriced as SOSUA!

The Dominicans are good, but get yourself a super dark skinned Haitian and they'll treat you like a king. At least that's been my experience so far.

Of course. The Haitians are refugees and are out to make all the money they can. They are playing it for survival. The Dominicans are on their home field, so they can just give bad service or rip you off and go home to their family. It is the same thing in Colombia with the Venezuelan refugees. Scams with the home team and great service from the hungry visitors.

I told her I'd pay for her meals and obviously she would stay with me in the hotel, but I told her I wasn't paying anything else. She said no problem. When I got back she never asked for anything.
