Cash? It was less than $40. I don't know, you need to have some money on you, I guess.

I don't know. Everyone has their own security method. I always carry a wallet in my pants though, after my childhood buddy who later became a semi-career criminal showed me how they casually "beat" the wallet out of a jacket. I presume the same method would work on a shirt pocket, too.

Of course you brought the debit card for just in case you needed money while out. That was common sense that you were taught from where you are from. Same as me. But look what happened to it? It got stolen. So now how would you get money from THAT card, if you actually needed money from the ATM? Especially it being a Charles Schwab fee less card. How did that work out for you? Not good, right? Your common sense approach is understood, but it did not help.

What would travel wisdom do? Travel wisdom would have went to the ATM way before there was a need to go out. Travel wisdom would have got the money, and took the card back to a secure place (safe).. As for your passport card, there are several places in Sosua that can make a color laminated copy of any document you have. And shrink it down to credit card size, if you need. I have several color laminated copies of my USA DL, My USA passport (1st and 2nd page same size of my passport and a wallet size version like a passport card). Ive done the same in the Philippines with that DL, ACR-I card etc.

I drive my car in the DR with my USA DL copy. If stopped, I show them my DL copy. When I buy stuff in the DR and they ask for ID, I show them my DL copy. When I get money for exchange from Caribe Express, I use my passport copy. That is enough for them. In the DR copies of documents are widely accepted. So let's change your scenario. You go to the ATM way before you need to go out, and get enough money for the day / night. You put the card back in your safe. You have your laminated copy of your passport card or passport full size copy. Now you go out and get pickpocketed. You still have your original documents locked up, and all they got was some money, and your laminated copies of stuff you have back ups of. No need to cancel a debit card they never got. You still have the card to get more money.

What I'm saying to you is something many guys can do to minimize their risk of losing shit to foul play. Nothing can be done for a guy that takes unnecessary risk, or is too lazy or tired to lock his stuff up.

Now where to go for the laminated copies? I like the Computer Copy center that is located in a business behind Baileys restaurant. They do a good job and the copies are cheap. You can get several copies of your documents laminated in color and it might be less than 250 pesos for the whole job (always ask the price). I would recommend getting at least 4 copies of each.

Good write up and writing style. I think you have also come to the right conclusion in your final lines. The point though is that there is no way in Himmel that all would have the time or inclination to do that and therefore there will always be suckers. There are in all the other parts of the world, whether Asia or Europe or elsewhere. Not getting drunk and being able to converse a little helps, however each to his own. Some may not ever come back and enjoy Rio or Medellin more.

For me, being lazy, I like my short flight, love the food, the proximity of a small town and especially the solitude when I want it, reason why I travel solo. As far as women are concerned, even without being a permanent resident, and without deluding anyone that I am looking for a girlfriend, they work for me. The women are pragmatic, they will take the today, without worrying about long term, if they are treated with normal human kindness, as many here would vouch for.

There are very talented writers here who know how to describe sexual encounters in a way that gets you hard. I don't know how to do that. To me it's simply like I came, I cummed, I paid. Boring.

And yet, I have never experienced so many terrible encounters as I have in Sosua. I've mongered all over the world except Africa and the Pacific, and never met a hooker who was trying to get out of the deal BEFORE I would bust my nut. Only in Sosua. It's insane and not an isolated experience.

That's a shame, really, because Sosua looks so promising. Could be a little Pattaya, only with a clean beach, if it weren't for the work "ethics" of these stupid, lazy and lying working girls.

Bingo! That's the way I roll, and it works well for me. I don't go downtown very often, and certainly not for my pussy, but if you are rarely there, it's nigh on impossible to develop those onging local relationships.

ARRIVAL.

Got into the VIP Arrival Lounge. Didn't see it there last year, is it new or did I not notice before? In any case, we got in with my Priority Pass card, had a couple of beers, coffee, and a sorry-ass sandwich, but the kicker is this. When we were ready, the attendant grabbed our bags, got us through the immigration, then through the customs, and let me tell you, that line that was huge and CRAWLING, and through the exit into the parking lot. We tipped him about $10, and that was $10 well-spent, LOL. We were the only people there, so I guess this thing hasn't caught on yet.

For those of you, guys, who don't know, you can buy a Priority Pass, but it also comes with some premium credit cards and gives you free access to over 1,000 airport lounges all over the world, but I've never encountered this "fast track" service.

We didn't check bags, but if you do, you can grab a couple of free beers or some more serious stuff while they get your luggage, and then they'll whisk you through. Nice!

LODGING.

We booked a pool villa in Hispaniola Residencial for $100 a night, and it was fantastic! I had some serious reservations about their weird chica policy, but it turned out to be all bullshit (thank you Oakie for putting my mind at ease).

FOOD.

Loved the restaurant at Hisponiola! The food was great, the ambiance – even better, and there was a wonderful Flamenco show. Truly, an enjoyable night and a perfect place for a classy dinner with a real date.

Other than that, we ate at Waterfront (Alicia Beach), the sports restaurant with huge screens across from the Bourbon Street, and a German restaurant, which name escapes me. The food was fine everywhere.

CHICAS.

The heat was intense. The town was half-empty. Most Pedro Gisante chicas were undoable.

I already wrote about my bad experiences (actually was so pissed off that even posted in the wrong section (Sosua Hotels). To recap:

Day 1. Sunday. Pulled a chica from Classico. Got to the room, started fucking. 10 minutes into the deed, come dreadful fake moans, then oh papi, then tu leche and shit. I knew where it was going so I told her to shut the fuck up in English and quite rudely, actually. To my surprise, she did. I somehow managed to bust a nut and kicked her out without further ado. She seemed quite perplexed, but fuck it. Not a total loss.

Day 2. Got mild food poisoning. Stayed at the villa.

Day 3. Pulled a Haitian girl off the street. Passed an interview with flying colors. Nice, friendly, soft-spoken, the only thing I didn't like was she had no phone. You can read what happened in the report I mistakenly posted in Sosua Hotels.

Day 4. Got my wallet picked at the Merengue. Rushed to the villa to report it and cancel the card, briefly thought about making it back, then called it the night, the mood wasn't there.

Day 5. Pulled a non-pro from a beach bar, and that was a highlight of my whole trip. She was well in her 30-s, but still had a killer ass and legs. While most of you, guys, wouldn't be interested in that age group, gee, what a difference she made! We had a few drinks, got in the pool, fooled around, talked, laughed, had more drinks, there was no rush and no discussion of time or money. Also no monster sex, but total GF experience, nice, tender, yet intense. Spent about 4 hours together before she went back to her 4 kids. Gave her 3 K (but she paid for a cab both ways) and a couple of gifts, which she appreciated.

Classico was packed on Sunday but dead afterwards, as was City Lights, but I've never gotten there after 1 AM. Merengue was hopping.

CONCLUSION.

I'm not a Sosua basher. I came to Sosua for the first time 20 years ago and hated it. But after being there probably about dozen of times since then, it kinda grown on me. The obvious advantages are:

1. Just a 3-hour flight from New York.

2. 2 great beaches with clear and wonderful, Caribbean-quality water.

3. Cheap international restaurants.

4. Cheap and nicely developed upscale vacation ownership market (I'm baffled why so many of you guys are still staying at hotels).

I have had a couple of week moments, but for that reason, I don't carry much $$ on the street. I usually where a pair of thin gym shorts underneath my pants to put money in, it has done the trick. But I forgot to do this a couple of years ago in Santo Domingo, lost some cash. Some chicas, and others, are real sneaky!

The idea isn't to stroll out the door with the mindset of being willing to accept what you can afford to lose. A better mindset is not to bring things that you don't intend to use where you are going. You can't assume you can trust people just because they interact with you, and smile in your face. I have learned through the years living abroad, is that its risky assuming a friendly smile and inviting conversation is cause to be at ease and not be aware of a potential scam or ulterior motivation behind someone's sudden interest (The short and the long game). My way is to give individuals zero credibility. Prepare for the worst in people, but be flexible enough to embrace the good when it is genuine.
