I only rent from the big agencies, period. I've been involved in accidents and had to deal with the local police, never jailed(thank god!). A few pointers.

1. rent from the major companies
2. carry only photocopies of passport/driver's license
3. many credit cards CDW won't cover SUVs
4. never ever assume guilt and start paying people.
5. if your "wingman" is a local, unless you really really know him, is still a local, DON'T TRUST HIM.
6. keep phone# to your embassy
7. learn spanish!!!!

I read that post and it sounds like they all extorted him, police, rental co., wingman, court, and especially family!! Dominicans with nice jeepetas run motoconcho guys down ALL OF THE TIME, and they won't see a day in jail, ESPECIALLY if it's not their fault.

Heck, half of those dominican jeep drivers won't stop anyway.

This information my friends should be stapled to every rental agreement in rep dom.

Renting a SUV is asking for trouble. Other than the fact the chicas may like to ride in a SUV it is not needed. A compact, not economy, car is more than adequate to travel the entire island.

This post by Terry U needs to be bumped to the top of the list every so often. All seven comments are common sense but it seems like a lot of guys loose their common sense as soon as the wheels touch down on the tarmac.

I agree. Thanks Ehunter. I am only half way done with the post (it's very long) but damned if I'm not convinced to just stick with buses and taxis. And even though the post is written poorly he is much smarter than me since he had the number to someone local and connected like Dominican Billy. And I would've never had the balls to ask the owner of Field of Dreams (someone he didn't even know or ever had spoken to) for 5500.

My take away from those reports is that it is a crap shoot whether the DR system decides to jack you or not. At any rate, I think it is clear what kinds of things can possibly happen.

How to rate the risk factor for car renters is totally up in the air though.

I get the feeling lots of stupidity took place which was not described in the original POP posting which we are not hearing about.

At the same time I can understand wingman/posters relationship IF the wingman was chosen on the spot there in the street. In other words those guys almost did not know each other at all before the trip.

Wingman and you should be paramount to blood brothers as far as I am concerned.

My "friend " reappears he looks like he was crying and scared. Get into car to go to police station near harbor while getting in car Jason from Adventure finally shows up. On way to Police station my "friend" explains he don't like blood that is why he left. I knew better he ran away like a scared little school girl after he screamed. Get to station wait there Jason says I take care of you I will take care everything. Victims family shows up they look a little mad but relize I am concerned too. I don't talk much and remain calm. The family understands it was accident I certainly didn't see them on my left large blind spot in that SUV. Jason says don'y worry I am here I will take care of you whole thing will be couple hundred dollars. He says don't tell anyone but you have 8000 pesos I will pay police chief and you will be ok. I don't have that much on me so I ask my "friend" for 1000 pesos more. We wait for long time 2 hours for paperwork and such so I think be all over after paying money. My "friend" starts whining like a little girl "I want to go to Herman's for a Chica I don't see why I should be stuck waiting for you its like when people are dying in Hospital I am not going to spend a month next to their bed what do I have to do with this your fault your fault! Then he says yea I saw that motorcyle on your left but don't worry I won't say anything " Like he is doing me some kind of favor? I wanted to ***** slap him. He is a I already told police what happened. I say I need you here I do not know how this is going to turn out I may get throw in Jail and you will be only one on planet who knows where I am. He says" no no Jason is good guy he will take care of you you don't need me. Ain't my fault ain't my fault you should have seen him you were driving. I paid for rental car all gas and his hotel room and he is my Wingman "friend'' you would think the ungrateful fucker would wait for me after running off leaving me for lynch mob and after all you never ever leave your wingman ever in a vulnerable place.............. I hear some screaming as taking shoe laces and look over and see 20 men most all naked with their penisis exposed hollering Gringo Gringo. I almost flicked them off and asked if they wanted to fight but didn't. 10 seconds later I am in cell with them.

Horrible story. I will inquire with a guy I know who works for Alamo in Dom Rep, how the third party liability insurance plays out, in case of an accident involving bodily injuries.

If I can't drive a car in Dom Rep, I won't go there. I can't be in the same location for 7 nights. I did that many times in the past staying in Sosua.

I'll post what the guy from Alamo has to say.

Something just doesn't seem right with that report. I have a strong feeling the rental agency AdventureCar had a lot to do with the misery the gentleman suffered. There is a report in this thread (#5530) which paints a completly different picture.

I don't doubt it is probably a major hassle if you get in an accident and someone is injured but I just can't see a reputable car rental agency not stepping in with assistance. The gentleman rented and paid cash up front. For me that signals a red flag right off the bat. I know it won't happen but I would like to hear AdventureCar's side of the story.

Food for thought....... If using a credit card for CDW it is wise to check with the credit card company, not the issuing bank, to see if they cover SUVs and luxury cars.

I will probably stick to my guns and continue to rent. There are just too many places in rep dom I like to visit and public transpo just won't hit it.

I have seen chicas from Santiago, who drive into Sosua to work the business, driving new sport utility vehicles. Not sure how they work the security deposit to rent those cars. Alamo puts a $1,000 hold on my credit card when I rent with them.

I have to have a car in Dom Rep. Reading the recent posts about accidents, I will drive extra careful.

As there are 3 bedrooms I would be more than willing to share the place with 2 others.

I was offered a price for the period that equals to 59$ per night for each person.

People who can stay the entire period will be preferred but I can accept shorter visits as well, depending on the interest here.

I liked what I saw back then and that is why I'm coming back. The reason I asked the question was that I have no other experiences in Sosua to compare it with. I guess all I want to know is how is the quality of chicas now a days compared to last December.
