Be careful out there.

It's literally a jungle out there in that part of town.

Visitors and ex pats in Sosua can take for granted the relative safety of Sosua, with it's endless patrols of Tourist, Federales, Nationales policing. ATM guards with sawed off shotguns.

But they are there for a reason.

It is very important for ex pats, and visitors alike, to keep a low profile and opt for security in their choice of residence. I can reduce my rental considerably by moving a few blocks away from town, but I enjoy a beer and walking home safely at night!

A low profile also prevents you from making local enemies. It's a very small town. You are watched and remembered. Stay away from altercations with, or between locals.

My buddy tried to intervene in a fight at Bar Central Tuseday night which saw a local hooker beat and kicked senselessly by the bouncer, and thrown in the gutter.

He's a big guy, and can take care of himself, but the culture here is different from back home, and there's no real right and wrong, only survival.

As the other posters warn, pay attention to your safety out there!

Another case of a robbery gone wrong. The robbers tied up the victims and this guy got loose and tried attacking the robbers with a machete he had in the house. The robbers shot him.

You start off by asking them what gift they want you to bring? You have to tell us what the ratio is. I bet that 99% start off asking for the latest iPhone, Laptop or Tablet? I can't imagine a Dominican woman asking for perfume or a dress from a gringo.

Dominican women can ask for anything, and do!

Personally, with my regular, I ignore all requests, and set my own limits by giving money, an occasional shopping trip to Playera or La Sirena, based on my own budget and services received, and good behaviour. LOL.

I limit my time with her to two or three days a week (at my age) on a regular basis, so she has to live her own life for most of the time independent from my support.

She, and a couple of her friends have grown comfortable with this arrangement, and I am under no obligation to pony up for rent, hospital costs or other expenses they incur from time to time.

But the little I give her on a regular basis, does make a difference in her life, and is appreciated. It was me who suggested out of the blue that she get running water up to the small third floor flat she shares with her kid, and occasional GF. For a hundred bucks she got it done in 2 weeks. There's also a small fridge in her place now from the money I gave her over the last 3 years. Now I can handle a few days at her place!

When it comes to chicas, you either train them, or they will train you! But it's your dough, so you should always get the last word. Took a little effort and a few heart to heart conversations, and a willingness to walk away, but paid off and we are both very happy with the set up! I personally wouldn't change a thing!

For each $1 spent in Dom Rep, I spend $1. 50 in Colombia and $2. 00 in Brazil. Performance of Brazilian girls is incomparable to any other destination. One thing that vexes me from time to time, is a level of disrespect and insults one can get or hear from Dominicans, something that would never happen in South America. Also, as I often repeat, imagine you have got a business card, and you present your business card to people you care about, family or old school friends. As a vet of both places I can say with 100% confidence that I would never set foot in the DR if the plane ticket prices to Rio werent so damn expensive!! I have been going to th DR for about 9 years now and in all that time I have only seen 1 girl in SD who could compare to the females in Rio. We won't even begin to talk about Sex skills with all the "LECHE LECHE PAPI" girls in Sosua.

This year I would love to travel to Colombia to see how it compares to the other two countries! With decent flights out of JFK, It may be a long time before I go back if Cartegena is decent.
