Yes, it is difficult to appropriately handle issues that you have no power to deal with, but remember that "deadbeat dads" also exist in the United States or whatever country you come from and often the mothers will receive government help with food, lodging, etc. Have you heard of Medicaid or the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) also known as "food stamps?"

In the DR women cannot turn to these programs and rely more on selling sexual services to tourists. If this does not succeed they may ask for money, which in turn is better than stealing.

Would we support a sharp increase, say double, in the tourist cards and departure taxes to support Dominican children with food and medicines and give them a bit more parity with first world children?

Asking Donde Padre probably won't really help, because the mother may have been abandoned by the father of the child, or he may be a married man or a deadbeat, or may have several children and little income. If it was as simple as calling him on his cell phone for money, she would probably have done that already.

I don't think Zedman's issue is whether or not kids or mothers need medicine at some point, or ignoring the cost being expensive. What he is addressing is an entirely differnt issue where the chica is most likely lying about her children being sick or needing medicine right in that moment. Thats two different issues. The problem with the shoe shine boys is that they are in a dieing industry, because so many people these days don't wear leather shoes that can be polished. I have found that they do a good job of shining shoes when given a chance.

Your "poor kid" shame tactic is weak, O K. The kids I see don't appear poor to me. Most look clean cut, have decent clean clothes on, and most have a neat haircut. Their job is to go to school, do their homework, and play with their friends. And when I see a kid with a wad of cash, in one moment, and then begging he's hungry the next. I know it's a hustle, and not a fact. So don't give me that crap about them being poor. And you can kill that noise as well, that they don't have any opportunity. As Socrates stated: " The only thing I know is that I know nothing". This is the reason why I began my note with the disclaimer that I "perceive" you to be one way while you very well may not be. It is certainly not my intention to offend you. I also agree with you that it does not matter how others see you and yes, there are some who can relate to your experiences. I was giving my perspective and I certainly do not want to drag this into a diatribe. I just wondered, given the critique, as to why you would continue to visit the place but I stand corrected, you did find something good in the place. My experience tells me, no place that I know of is "unadulterated bliss".

Thats just it, you don't need to post disclaimers if you do one simple thing. Ask for more feedback or ask direct questions to what you are wondering. But for you to come up with this whole re invention of what I didn't say, and assign it to me, that is what needs to be addressed moreso than what I actually said. At that point, what I conveyed and what you understood, they didn't match. Thats why I asked you to post where I conveyed my thoughts the way you described.

IMO, some people are very sincere when it comes to offering disclaimers. But too often people who throw out disclaimers, they do so because they want to make a judgement about a person, and avoid any backlash. Nobody can pin them down, because they don't take ownership. A clue to their intent, is whether or not they engage you in trying to seek feedback to make sure they understood you. And since I did not see any attempt from you to directly engage me in understanding my POV. Your intent is suspect.
