I have been in Sousa for the past five weeks, leaving today. Had a great time, but, got screwed by a Local Dominican, he calls himself Joey.

He will be your friend, promise you the world, and what I learned- Lie, Cheat Steal. Stay away from him. He lives in Purta Plata, and comes to Sousa to look for those white guys traveling alone. He stole money from me, and I will get even. This trip, next trip or the trip after.

Same here had a very bad experience with a guy in Juan Dolio. I made the mistake of letting one of these Motoconcho (scooter taxi) guys offer me his "knowledge" and use him for rides around the town. I rented an apartment at the guesthouseholland for a month, and made the mistake of allowing him to enter into my apartment. He seemed friendly, and he was kind of poor so I felt sorry for him. That guy took complete advantage of my hospitality and kindness, even in the last week there he "stole " my wallet for a morning (so he could make copies of my drivers license, credit cards etc.). True to form he bombarded me with chicas at the rate of about 3 a day (at the tune of 3000 pesos each daily) , which soon added upto a nice chunk of change daily. All of them of course arriving unanounced throughout the day without me asking for any of them. Some of the chicas were very pushy and demanding, and very hard to get rid of. There was a kind of a blackmailing going on to because I had met a Novia style girl on one of the dating sites. He was doing everything in his power to break us up, because he wanted me to keep gving him his Chulo (pimp) money for his chicas, and keep me isolated. He was jealous that I could have a real relationship. I guess. He told me all kinds of stories that my Novia girl was actually in a relationship, with a "Duro" (tough guy) , and that if her Dominican lover found out the he would come over and beat me up, or have me stabbed.

There was also a couple of days when I rented a car while there, he and his friends invited themselves in, and one of them kept offering me something to drink out of bottle in a paperbag, which I never saw him drinking out of himself. I am very sure, had I drank it, I would have passed out, they would have availed themselves of my apartment keys, threw me in a ditch somewhere and gone back, and robbed me of all my computer, passport, camera, credit / bank cards etc. I would have awaken much later without knowing what the happened.

I know that guy and his buddies (guys and gals) were dangerous, its a combination of lack of education, desperation, poverty, and jealousy, which can drive a person to do anything. I know that if I had stayed there longer, I would have eventually come to harm. They were just getting greedier and the scams were getting bolder. And police, well they are a joke in the DR, don't bother asking them for help with anything, all can be bribed with very small money, eitherway the guy was shadowing me so I couldn't go to the police anyway.

Moral of the story don't trust any DR guy that is offering you anything there. I came to meet women, I should have stayed focused on that, and not feel sorry for this losers (basura humano) scammers pieces of mierde. If I wanted information about tourist things could have gotten it from the woman I had met. Also was giving way to much money out for him and all those chica putas (making him greedier and greedier). Throwing money around and overpaying is a HUGE NoNo. Also my spanish was low intermediate, so was not able to defend myself very well, so he was able to overtalk me in alot of situations, since then have improved my spanish. Lastly, most important of all don't feel sorry, or worry about this trash, those motoconcho guys are mostly uneducated idiots that can't read or write to save their own life, are lazy wouldn't work anything even if someone gave them work, parasites that mostly take advantage of the female population of the DR, and some unsuspecting unwary tourists to maintain them.

I know this is off topic, but I am looking to take an extended trip to Sosua. When I am there, I usually swim on the beach each day. However, most of my exercise is with the girls. If I am going there for a longer visit, I will need to work out in a proper gym.

I know there was a gym about the casino. Is it still there? Has anyone used it? Any others?

I don't want to criticize because everyone has made the same mistake before by enlisting these scum to "help" them out, however I would suggest you take the theft as a lesson learned, politely refuse his "friendship" and "assistance" when you return and avoid him like the plague. You will never get even, and if you do get him back somehow, brace yourself for the repurcussions. This is how the "horror stories" get started.

Go back, chase skirts, have a nice vacation, and forget about it. (or not, and we can sit and read with our drinks and popcorn)
