There is a new hustle going around the DR. It works like this. A person approaches you asking for you to smell this cologne they are selling. The cologhne has an intoxing effect, which disables you temporary. They then proceed to help you, when in truth they are robbing you. Watch out for sniffing cologne you don't initiate.

Posts: 4286Thanks. I can remember reading a post before where a guy said the chica threw his camera or some other item out the window in order to steal it. I doubt that will happen at New Garden. I have had very few problems with thieves in Dominican Republic. Guys visiting the Dom Rep for the first time, will have a heads up from reading the posts.

The cool thing about the rooms in the new wing at NG is that you lock it with your room key from the inside of your room. Meaning, your chica aint leaving the room until you actually insert the key and let her out.
So don't leave your key in the door while showering, lol!

The diving is poor but I went every day for something to do. Most of the diving is right in Sosua Bay. The wreck was great and the Airport Wall & Three Rocks (not be confused with the popular Five Rocks site) out by the airport were good. A day trip to Paradises Island is also worth the time. I used Scuba Elite on the main street. They were very accommodating. Most of the time it was just me, the boat captain and the dive master. They also do cavern dives but did not have the time to try one.
I changed money on the street or at the numerous internet cafes. Their rates were completive and there were no fees. Stay away from the ATM machines. The fees are killers.
Had no safety issues. Kept valuables locked up and only carry a minimum amount of pesos. The NG is close to everything so it was only a short walk back if more money was needed. I got to know a couple of the NG girls and would leave then in my room while I ran errands. Never had a problem. Did hook up with a crazy chica one night but NG security took care of the problem for me.
Hint: tip the security guy once in awhile. He will watch your back. Also tip the maid. She will leave you extra towels and anything else you need.
I did a full report back in June.

Posts: 4286Nice room, all set up with your external speakers on your laptop, play some music, cool. Mosts safes I have encountered are not big enough for a 15 inch laptop. I bought cable lock for my laptop, but I haven't used it yet.

DO NOT exchange cash at the airport as they have the worst exchange rates. I even decided to ask while at MIA International what the exchange rates were and almost spit my drink in the woman's face laughing so hard!
In fact, on your way to Sosua from the airport ask your driver if he can stop you at Western Union because they had the best exchange rates last time I was down there. Other than that, the ATM's have some of the best exchange rates overall.
If you can, try to get a room in the New Wing at New Garden. All of my friends who where staying in the old wing saw my jacuzzi suite and their mouth's hit the floor, lol! These rooms are much cleaner and quieter then all the others. You don't have to get the jacuzzi suite though; they have other rooms in the new wing for $69 a night.
Honestly, I never got around to using the jacuzzi. The main reason being that I literally was only in my room when it was time to bang or sleep. I could not allow myself to stay inside too long because I was scared I would miss something. And you WILL miss out staying inside for too long. Me and my wingman came back from eating, I went inside my room to take a dump, came back out and my wingman had this phat-booty cutie all over him. I was like "Damn! Where the hell did she come from and why didn't I spot her first?"
But I patiently waited and scooped her ass up as soon as she came back down stairs :P
Will be at NG again in December. Plan to use the Jacuzzi this time!

Jetblue allows one 50 pound checked suitcase for free, second checked bag they charge a fee. I stopped bringing my fins and mask and snorkel. Several dive shops in Sosua, where you can rent equipment. American Airlines allows two checked bags, no extra fee.
Would love to try the kite boarding in Cabarete, that looks like fun. Seems the wind is always blowing on the beach in Cabarete.

As mentioned Condos Dominicanos is a nice, well-run complex in the middle of town. Also Casa Residencial.
The realtors can advise on others, making sure you get a title to the property, etc.
The management will make or break a complex.
If poor, the place will go down hill fast, regardless of how it looks now.
Also, renting first is a good idea.

RENT FIRST. Stay there. Talk to the residents and get to understand the complaints and issues. There is no place you can buy you can't rent first.
Condos Dominicanos in the middle of Sosua right near the city hall has decent studios offered in that range. It's been around a long time, has a stable management and owners, is rentable both to regular vacationers and mongers (it's chica friendly). It's got it's own internal political issues though and it's no AC . I think that title is reliable but always have the transaction vetted by an experienced attorney. There are lots of other studios around.
I would not just buy one without living in it and doing the homework as you can easily end up just losing all your money.
