I've some experience with this about 5 years ago I was driving through the interesction at the supermarket. I was caught in the middle of the interection when the light turned red. The traffic cleared and I continued so as not to block the interection. There was a police (amet) standing on a soap box how flagged me down once I cleared the interection. He caught me driving without a seatbelt, drinking a beer, with no drivers license or even a photo copy. 3 cops jumped into my car a made me drive up the mountain to the other police station. They then told me that my car will be impounded and I would have to go to court on moday and it was Saturday (from what I understand I speak very little spanish). I'm Canadian once there I say 2 Americans that they caught driving without there seatbelt and they were trying to get 5000 DOP from them to let them go. I think they wanted that crazy money because the guys rented a $100 US SUV from the airport. Luckly I had a American friend that kind of lives down there come a rescue me. He knew a few of the police officers and they let me go after paying them 1000 DOP total. He helped out the two other guys but they had to pay more. That was my second trip. I was funny to me because they told me they don't care about the dring and driving. But the red light was the major thing for them. I got caught twice by that same light. It's almost like the cars directly in front are in cohoots with the AMET police to make sure you get stuck under the light as it turns red. The 1st time, they told me to pull into the PN parking lot. Was willing to give some pesos to get out. The cute female AMET officer with the nice ass was given my license by the other officer. She looked at it, and walked over to me and told me I could go. The 2nd time, I knew I didn't go through that light. But I got stopped anyway. This time me and my passenger (american) both complained to the officer that he was wrong. I think we convinced them that they could have been wrong, because they let us go after showing them my credentials. Way before those incidents, I did get a ticket for no seat belt. The ticket was 1600 pesos. I had a dominican "friend" take me up to the AMET station. He spoke on my behalf (I stayed in the car) and I left the station 1000 pesos poorer. But I learned something from that and other instances while dealing with him. The dominican dude wasnt really my friend. I shouldn't have had to pay 1000 pesos. Plus he never told me that I could have given the officer much much less at the time I was stopped. I learned that later. That would have been useful info instead of thinking I need him to "help" me out. That's the way he hustles to make a living.
