I decided to start an experiment today. I went to my local liquor store in the States and walked around and wrote the prices in my phone of the usual adult beverages that I purchase. When I travel around I will use the list against what I see in the duty free shops and in the grocery stores in other countries. One thing I saw tonight was Barcelo Imperial. It was $21. In November I bought the same bottle in Ole Supermarket in Santo Domingo and I am quite sure that I paid more than that for it. If I am correct, it was 1500 pesos, which is close to $26.

I was surprised to see it cost less here than there. But it was the same thing when I went to France looking to buy Cognac and noticed it actually cost more there than it does in the States. A couple of other comparisons: Paradis - My Liq $1000, Duty Free $2300. Louis 13 - My Liq $3500, Duty Free $2800. Just an idea for people that usually shop duty frees and stores in other countries thinking they are getting a deal.

You don't mention the size. This morning the 700 CC. Of Imperial was priced at 985 DOP at Bocachica's Ole. The 1. 75 l. , a little over 2000. In general, brandy, wine and champagne are more expensive here than where I live in NY although prices there swing widely from one store to the other. One oddity,32 oz. Of Coors light for 138 DOP at the Ole vs. 22 oz of Presidente for 130 minimun at local colmados.

Last night I was at a popular rooftop terrace with an ISG member and the newbie and the girls were coming in late like it wasn't even a curfew. Welcome to the most delayed trip report in history.

The trip took place just before the hoax pandemic of 2020.

Mid to late February, so this report is really first timer impressions of DR, and given the time distance some details are hazy.

This isn't a report for the experts, its to help new visitors to understand the scene.

Circumstances meant I flew in from the UK via Miami, waiting for the evening AA flight.

After the horror stories of bad service from American was pleasantly suprised by nice people and good service for the short hop.

Getting from the Virgin Atlantic International to American terminal and navigating the drugs dogs and general chaos of US airports was a chore, but I eventually got through unscathed.

Landing late I went straight to the Riazor Hotel, Santo Domingo 12 hours of air travel and a developing head cold were a shit start, so I immediately retired. Use Uber from the airport to save on the taxis at arrivals. Its not a pretty city, in fact its pretty much hog-ugly. Like Birmingham in the UK with 25 degree heat. Freeways of dubious construction and endless mid and low level concrete accommodation. Cuba its not.

The lower levels of the hotel towards the front are a bit noisy from the ac units, and nearby parking lot.

Other than that its a good clean hotel, suited for monger activities. Not crazy party style, but send-her-to-my-room style visits.

Nice big bathroom and the toilet only smelled slightly of swamp. (Common in tropical parts). There's no room service but a 24 hour cafe was attached to the hotel.

Next day. Breakfast outside the thunderingly busy La Indpendencia, then a taxi into the main shopping street. "La Conde".

I took a seat at Paco's cafe at the end of the road and enjoyed the view. First thing: DR has a lot more mulatta and white women than I'd imagined. It was a much whiter population than I expected. Not to say there weren't all types though.

So as a pale newcomer I wandered down the street, a 21 year old shapely girl tried to convince me to have a massage, OK, I'll go with that, break my DR cherry, Can't quite recall the cost I think it was around 1000 pesos for the massage. No extras discussed yet.

I wandered into "Claro" a telecoms company and after some paperwork procured a SIM for my old Android, that was OK, now I can collect numbers etc.

Later that day I walked around the Cathedral and a quick look at the Zona Colonial, which is maybe 10% as charming as Havana. I picked up some generico Cialis from the pharmacy on my way back, no prescription, ask for generico, or you'll get the high priced branded version.

First day I found good steak house La Parilla on George Washington, and topped up the testosterone. There were one or two streetwalkers by the casino and petrol station nearby, but they looked skanky, downright dangerous. Tiredness got me and I returned to the hotel.

I'd been corresponding online with board member SubCmdr from this board and he kindly agreed to meet up in a day or so, and want to say thanks for the tips etc. A lot of folks use Tinder but I only had reduced time so it was really hit-and-run for me. The combination of concrete blockhouse architecture, dim lighting and tatoo'd expats gave it a prison yard vibe to be honest. With table service.
