Now, before someone jumps bad at me and starts beating flame war drums about lack of experience, the assumption that others have not visited other places is a bogus one from the jump off. Last time I checked a lot off people posting here have passports and the ability to purchase a ticket to go anywhere they have a visa that allows them to visit. So the distinct possibility exists that when someone speaks highly of the Dominican Republic they may be expressing a personal preference that may not have anything to do with the actual location. For example, "begging" as you describe it is not something that I have experienced since I've been on the island.
