I'm planning a trip in March and I'm going to rent a car. I understand most say its not advised due to the shady road conditions and dangerous drivers, but I'm a truck driver and I'm used to driving a 70' vehicle with crazy drivers and messed up roads (can't be worse than Detroit). When I was last in sosua, looking to hire a car to head down to santiago for the day, I asked around also for bikes, but the deposit required for bikes is higher than that for a car, especially with the higher CC bikes. Is there somewhere I can hire an automatic, as I don't know how to ride a geared bike which was what ultimately ended the idea of hiring one of the big CC bikes needed to get on autopista duarte.

My experience is 180 from yours but I do not do the casas for many of the reasons you mentioned. Casa girls are on the clock and have to answer to their bosses. What I like about the casas here is that they do not knock on the door after the hour's up.
