I used to live in SD este for 3 months when I first retired and the real SD este I lived in was nothing to write home about. Sure I could've lived on Espaa in a nice apartment but I wanted real Dominican living and I got it. Calle Ocho was my home, right by La Princessa. Trash and horse shit in the street but I loved the experience. Honestly, if you aren't going to Mixers night club or the aquarium there is no other reason to be in SD este IMO. They have been closing the floating bridge so traffic is terrible coming and going to Este.

No fancy preppie stuff, never been my style. I live with the locals not just drive by. I have money but money has never defined me. Lived in Juan Dolio, Sd Este, Los Conquitós, Subic bay, SD Gascue and Medellin and my experiences are documented on ISG. I've been to places where I have been the only American like Pereira Colombia and Santiago Cuba and its well documented here also. I remember when or imported steak it was basically train steakhouse on Pasteur, David Crockett and Asadero argentino. Only asadero still exists. If I say they have entraa as old a any parrillada in Buenos Aires, which they do, it means something as Argentina I known for steaks and asado. Este? Not so much. Chicharrones maybe. Speaking of which where are the best chicharrones in DN? El pedregal. Lived three blocks away a few years back. Some over in the Sosua section are taking about some of the qualities of Dominicans that have been described in the post below and are projecting the behavior of this small cross section of the population across the entire country of Republic Dominicana. My understanding is that the poster was clearing describing Sosua. But if I'm mistaken he is free to set the record straight.

We all know Sosua is THE puta pueblo of the country. Regular tourism and sexual tourism are the main drivers of the economy. In my country of origin we would describe them as "back road country folk". Not hating on them. That's just what they are. Ask any Dominican in Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este what they thing of Sosua and see the reaction you get.

For those of us who live here and know Sosua well, we are aware that locals: Don't speak formal Spanish.

In Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este when I was in my Spanish language classes I asked my professor about why I don't hear people speaking on the street the way she is teaching Spanish to us. She told me of course not. "I do not speak the way I speak in class at home. But, I speak the exact same way in as I do in class when I'm with my fellow teachers, businessmen or a formal event".

Shit, that's the exact same way it works in English. I speak the kings English when it's going to get me paid. I talk how I like when I just don't give a fuck! She told me to watch local news programs for examples of Dominicans speaking formal Spanish. She was right. And curiously they are easier to understand. I also found that Spanish TV programs from Colombia were much easier for me to understand also.

But, I was just told my Spanish was "so bad" by somebody in my social circle that spoke English. I guess I should have spent more time hitting the books and less time running the streets chasing pussy.

Do not understand the Western concept of Name, Number, Street, Town.

False. In Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este where there are actually real streets instead of horse paths that were paved over, formal directions are the norm. They use google maps and formal street names and numbers for buildings and apartments. Ever seen a business card from Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este? It does not have fucking landmarks and references to places that no longer exist on it. It has a formal street address. When I listen to my girls order from the colmado they give a very specific address to include the street name, and residential number where I live. And they give a cross street for a reference as some streets do have the same name.

They tolerate, but have no real respect for mongers. Only their dinero!

Did they have a reason? A monger, any monger is going to have a hard time earning respect unless they are repeat visitors. They will earn respect over time with people that know them. Random strangers that don't know them will still be prone to disrespect just as some have said before. It's in the record. It's all about the money.

Lack of respect towards me is the exception not the norm for the Dominicans I deal with. That's why over the years as my Spanish has improved and I have learned the culture I understand that saving face in public is an important concept. Disrespect someone on the street in front of other people and you will get hit by the tool and your whole radiator flushed. Don't think your western status is going to protect you. The grand jefe mobile lends itself to a certain amount of deference in and of itself. But of course I don't live in a puta pueblo either. Nor am I perceived as a monger.

For those that might think I need to earn respect, I tell expats and Dominicans all the time that I don't need to earn jack from you. All the respect I need to earn arrives in my bank account. Those who expect that when a restaurant tab says "propina included", that's what it means. Servers rarely, if ever, get to share that!

I was told very early on in my life here in Republica Dominicana by a waitress that served me and then served me take out later that night that a propina is a gift. Not to be expected. Anything you get is great. That is because tips are a foreign concept that hard core prostitutes have latched onto in order to guilt guys that lack a pair because they have been clipped by the "me too" movement in western nations. If a prostitute wants a tip, give her a 100 pesos. If she balks tell her to give it back. Because you know that she can buy lunch with that. Tip the way you mother fucking want and don't let those who think they know more than you tell you otherwise. If you really want to know how to tip in Republica Domincana get a real non pro girl friend. Take her out. And let her decide the tip. If she treats your money as her own (as all my girlfriends do) it won't be much.

Hoes consider everything they do with a john, in addition to lying there and letting you pound their ass for a designated period of time is worthy of a propina. Can't comment on that because I've never rented a car in Republica Dominicana before. I've always used taxis, walked, transporte publico, friends or Uber to get around until I received the Gran Jefe mobile.

I have had the experience of being ripped off. Early on I got tired of the lights going off. So I another one of those fellow expats that had been here too long recommended this guy to resolve the problem. Long story short, I got clipped for 10,000 pesos for a pair of batteries that were rebuilt just enough to pass the initial tests. I wound up having replace the battery and the inversor. Dropped 2000 on that adventure. But it was the absolute best money that I spent. The question will always remain: Did I overpay? That was the last ripoff I experienced. Oops, I lied. A moto driver got me for 50 DOP in Boca Chica. At the time I was fortunate enough to be able to afford it. Grownman pointed out the error of my ways and it's never happened again. You know the way Men in the Arena do it. Mr. E and were just talking about being men in the arena. I welcomed him to the club.

Get out of the puta pueblos people and see the country for real! And if you are a expat that lives in one you need to remember Sosua is the behavioral exception not the norm of the country. One those "Carnaval" trips I read about can get you out of the puta pueblos. Check out the itinerary. And I'm not talking about the cruse line. Maybe that will teach the ones that need to know something about life outside of a puta pueblos? Just don't post anything about pussy over there in "the leaders" section. Those dispensing advice about dominican behavior need to stay in their lane and make it clear to others that there are indeed different parts and ways of doing things throughout Republica Dominicna. Don't get it twisted. Are things uniform in your country of origin? I am speaking about where I have lived and handled the business of real life: Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este. That's what I know. And I didn't just discover it. But I'm not self absorbed enough to think all Dominicans are like the ones I have been dealing with in Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este. And most people of logic and sense know that when you start making generalizations across entire populations you are more than likely to be wrong in some cases.
