As I was there several times, can say, never had problems with the police because of girls. When a girl had stolen money from my buddy, they tried to help us, and wrote much to a big book, and did not ask for money. But never they telled, that it may be forbitten to search girls. But the truth is, that they earn little, so the have to search money somewhere else. My buddy was asking for a present (money) in the airport while we want to leave at las americas airport inside the custom area! To avoid problems and may be to miss the plane, he payed 200 Peso. Then the problem was over and the police was saying thanks for the money. We should accept those litte "accidents" and count as developing-help, like when girls ask a little more money. Who cares? This contry and the girls are anyhow beautyful and worth to accept this.

Prostitution is illegal in the Dominican Republic. I know this because I had a discussion about the issue with a well known hotel owner. The owner had a long talk with a police commissioner about the matter. Whether laws are enforced, whether police officers are paid under the table to look the other way, whether ***** houses are licensed to appear that they are another type of business, is another matter.

As in most Latin American countries Prostitution is legal, pandering (pimping) is ilegal...

If prostitution is legal, why did the police think they could blackmail Gas6459? Most of us who know Latin America know that from time to time the police try funny stuff, but they rarely press their case.

I remember being arrested for 'failure to bribe' in Lima 20 years ago (ostensibly because I was an illegal immigrant and I didn't have a passport to prove my innocence). The cop actually pulled me into jail, where I was left to rot for --- 10 minutes. I have gringo written over my face, and my Spanish has a strong American accent. The arresting officer was actually publicly humiliated by his Chief, who made a big show of letting me go. Latin America may be crooked, but its not entirely without rules.

If prostitution is legal in the DR, as I always thought it was, I don't think I would have paid the bribe. At least, I would have bargained down to a reasonable level (300 pesos or less).

Of course, since one pays the house at any of the casas, that must mean that the casas are all illegal and are all paying off the cops.

(Actually, what is truly shocking is that all the message parlors in or near the Zona Colonial were put out of business but the casas were not. Can anyone tell me why? Is it because the casas are all "take out"?)

My brother got stolen over a thousand in cash and personal belongings by 3 Discovery Hotel employees yesterday afternoon. Hotel Discovery is the one next to Parque Independencia entrance and Pacos cafeteria. He was at the pool next to his room when he went to use the bath of his room and he tried to enter but he can't. He went back to the pool to tell her wife to try to enter with the key and he suddenly heard a door slammed and he saw 3 guys running down the stairs. He went back to his room and opened the door. His wallet was empty and his Raymond Weil gone. Hi claim to management and they said he invented the robbery and that they trust their employees and also told my brother that they are not responsible for articles outside the safe box.

My brother filed a claim to Politur, they told him that this was the third claim against this hotel in a month and that roberies occurs with frequency in DR hotels. He was referred to local police and they did not do anything because hotel owner paid the police (not the Politur) for their services. See pic of the hotel below.

I was in DR two-weeks ago, flew in from Miami (as usual) and rented a car at Americanas airport (no problem, just takes forever); I stayed three nites in Colonial part of town and during day, I slept; I had one very scarey experience, I picked up a street-girl on the Malecon(11pm), big mistake! two minutes later policia is on my ass to pull over (damn!). So, I pulled over, the cop didnt speak a lick of english and i pretended I knew very little spanish, anyway he demanded ID and I gave him my expired NJ license...he kept driving with me in the passenger seat while girl was in the patrol car behind us with his partner; He kept saying same BS, "prostitution is illegal in DR "and "I was in big trouble", and i repeated I want no trouble in my broken spanish...after several long minutes driving toward cabanas he said he could let me go for a price ($50 USD), so, I gave it to him and he said fuck the girl rd for me (which I did);

Ok, moral of the story is that the DR police are crooked (yes!!) but , i look like a gringo and was stupid enough to pick up a chica on the main drag and they are looking for us to make extra money. The bottomline is that I was not afraid and I ultimately knew he wanted a bribe and theres not too much you can do about it unless you want to be risky and not pay or stop when they are trying to pull you over.

So, be careful out there; by the way me and the chica laughed about it and enjoyed a bottle of wine in the cabanas after we had multiple positions and BBBJCIM..so total cost of chica, cabana with bribe $80 USD (still a bargain for US prices).

$80 total. 80 - 50(DR cop) = $30. (for chica,, wine and cabana)

Bottle cheap wine in cabanas. Wine. In the DR? (never asked for wine in a cabana.) = $10
Cabanas: 300 - 600 pesos = $15
$50 + $10 + $15 = $75 chica = $5.00 BBBCIM.. yes a very good BS s**t story, oops, Imean bargain.

I know I sound naive, but I always assumed the casas were legal operations. In fact, I now realize I am clueless about the law (even though I have picked up many girls off of the street in the Zona Colonial and have visited half the casas in Santo Domingo.

Can anyone in the know tell us what the law actually is in the DR?

(p.s., I know what the law effectively is there; one can offer any woman $ anytime one wants, and almost always your offer is accepted and the police couldn't care less. The only exception that I am aware of is in the tourist district of the city, where open trade is discouraged).

Thanks for the kind words. In fact your informative posts have been quite helpful. I guess getting taken in the DR is somewhat of a rite of passage. It is still embarrassing when you realize that you've been had. I hope that my candor will help the next monger avoid a similar fate.

Thank you for your terrific report! By telling both the good and the bad about your trip - you showed yourself to be an honest and credible person.

Anyone who tells you that they're a DR regular and hasn't gotten scammed or flim-flammed down there is lying to you. It may not be the same scam - but they've gotten "taken" in some way or in one form or another.

I've been victimized in a credit card scam at a hotel in SDQ and had a valuable gold chain stolen from my condo in Sosua by a staff employee, and I certainly have been around [alot] and consider myself to be pretty sharp traveler. A guy like your guy "Jose", probably exists in every town in that country!

The good parts of your trip however sounded pretty darn good! The girl you posted a picture of is gorgeous, and you had some agreeable meals and won back some money at "21"! All good.

Of the places you missed - "The Mansion" would have been worth it and so would Casa Azul. Casa MonaLisa isn't much, you probably didn't miss much there.

You are on the right track. There are quite a few 'dance' clubs in the Malecon area. I can't remember all of the names at the moment. But there are two clubs behind the Jaragua hotel and two clubs near Hotel Mystic.

Try the ones near hotel Mystic they have some very beautiful ladies. Price is as you indicated.

There are also some nice street girls on Indepencia ave. but be careful, some of them look very suspicious.

i had direct knowledge several years ago that a number of members of the policia nacional working in the capital will involved in a stolen rental car flim-flam racket. they would work directly with car thieves, who would steal rental cars as part of a scheme to bilk money out of tourists credit cards when they used the cards to cover their rental auto insurance.

its not surprising that the "cops" are getting more aggresive - maybe the passport requirement for us tourists is slowing down business for them.
