One of the things I have picked up on being here is that second homes, weekend trips, day trips is what makes living in Santo Domingo / Santo Domingo este bearable. Living in the city (especially if you have to drive) is tough. It is stressful and time consuming. And getting worse as each day, week, month, year passes. But it is where many people get paid. So when they get their day or two off (and many just get one day off) they are trying to enjoy it someplace else than where they are a wage slave during the week.

I am even thinking maybe of about staying around Santo Domingo Este next time I go there.
