I have finally settled for a place in the Gazcue area. Close to Av Indepencia. One room in a 3 room apartment and apparently the guy stays in one and rents out the other two. It is going to be for a night but I would write up once I see what it is all about. Hopefully, I wouldn't have to also seek a cabana so. Gazcue works.

Funny, I know that feeling. Hodelpa Centro Plaza Hotel in Santiago is about $100US per night, free wifi, good free breakfast buffet. I think this was mentioned here before, just want to bring the info back to the front. It's a tip on an inexpensive, but decent restaurant in the Gazcue area. It's on Casimiro De Moya (one block north of Ave Independencia) near the corner of Ave Pastuer. It's called Phillipe Dominicana. It's a very small restaurant in a quiet area. Nice place to bring a date or friends. They have a small menu of dominican dishes. The food is delicious. If you are also sick of inflated bill / checks because of itbis and other taxes, then this is the place for you. They serve lunch and dinner. I think they open around 11:30am & close around 7pm. It's best to come there early or mid afternoon. It is a very cozy & popular place for the locals, and they tend to run out of food selections very quickly. I ate there most times. Clean, good service. The last time I went there, we ordered two meals to go. 2 separate containers of rice & beans, with chicken (each with a little salad) , and one order of avocado. All for only 360 pesos.

Thanks for this one. Question to all, given that this kind of food is everyday stuff for most local women, do they actually dig it OR would they rather have different kind of food? If so, what are those and where are the places where one can have such food without having to pay tourist prices. I personally would not mind knowing a decent barbecue joint. With steaks and spareribs etc. Around gazcue area.
