We will just have to wait to see.

That being said I did see that the weekend edition of the Zeta will have a deeper look into this story and the possible connections the person they have in custody being part of a cartel. Also from other reports I've seen the guys GF is the one telling them most of the info and they suspect that more people were involved so they might not be giving all the information at this time since they are looking for more individuals.
Your link to the BBC report and the map they have were the tourists were camping was wrong. They were at the beach kind of on a little cliff overlooking the water from the pics I've seen. Also they did take the tires from the vehicle and put them on the GFs truck.

Round up the hundreds thousands us homeless addicts, give them bus fares to Tijuana where housing, food, drugs pussies are cheap.
Let them screw around with the Cartels.
Will solve lots of us problems.

The more people post about crimes in Tijuana or elsewhere in Mexico, the better for me. The more guys who are discouraged to visit because of fear, the better for me. The fewer swinging dicks, the better for me. Stay away, please.
Sincerely,

Posts: 65333 Surfers Murdered in Ensenada
Mexican press rarely does independent investigation. In this case they only repeat what the Baja Norte AG told them, and she did not have hard evidence, did not give out a lot of info, only a theory the banditos wanted to steal the tires. Wonder how she can be sure they just wanted tires?
It's hard to believe banditos would kill 3 guys just to steal some tires, then they did not take the tires, just burned the truck. Hard to believe they could shoot all 3 guys in the heads if they were resisting, fighting.
The 3 guys were surfers. Why were they camping next to a stream in Santo Tomas, in the middle of nowhere 15 miles East of the shore as in this BBC article. They may be in or near cartel's territory where narcos produce and distribute drugs, looked suspicious and had to be removed quickly.

I think there is more to this triple murder than just a random robbery. There were quite a few cases in Tijuana where Americans, including high school kids, tried to score some drugs, ended up kidnapped and murdered. I would wait for more information from reliable sources. May be the bros know people with inside information. Baja LE has incentives to spin crimes involving foreign nationals like this one. The Mexican press does not know everything. Even when they know big stories, they may be too scared to report them truthfully.
Random violent crimes of opportunities against tourists are far more serious than violence between cartels.

So far this year in Mexico they have had numerous politicians or people wanting to run in the upcoming elections be killed. Right now the Cartels run more of Mexico than the government from what I see and hear.
I don't believe there's an easy solution and unfortunately both the US and Mexico have let it grow over the years instead of dealing with the problem in the beginning.

Posts: 3196FWIW, there are reports that the cops' story about tire robbing is BS. Some suspect this was another murder due to mistaken identity. One cartel rubbing out suspected members of another cartel. I think the US needs to come down like the wrath of God on a few of these cartels. There needs to be some pretty harsh penalties for killing or harming innocent tourists.
