You are exaggerating the amount of problematic customers those in the service industry. Sure there are a few, and you will inevitably run into them from time to time, but you are trying to make it sound like half the customers you deal with are too demanding, insulting and abusive. Not true. If you provide below-average to good service, these types of customers will be few and far between. It is when you provide terrible service that you will encounter a higher rate of abusive customers. The fact is, if you provide average service or better, the great majority of customers will behave just fine.

My point is, being a waiter is a menial, easy job. Randomly pick 1000 people out of the population. Train them for 2 days and 1000 of them will be able to perform the job. Then take those same 1000 people and train them for two days to be an anesthesiologist. Two days later you will have 0 anesthesiologists.

Now, before I start a "Being a Waiter is a Difficult Job" thread, I'd just like to say this: When I was just a lad, I actually worked in a restaurant. (Of course, this was before I found out that with very little talent & a whole lot of luck, I too, could become a professional douchebag in the entertainment industry.) Yes, I actually worked in a restaurant for a grand total of 2 days. And it was one of the most stressful jobs I ever had. It wasn't so much that it was incredibly mentally challenging (outside of memorizing the ins & outs of a million menu items.) It was having to be *constantly* multi-tasked, while the customers, who thought they were dealing with indentured fucking servants, incessantly called upon you, in the most demeaning & insulting ways, to complain about a bunch of shit, much of which you had no control over anyway.

Now, I'm quite sure that there are tons of jobs that are thousands of times more stressful, more difficult, etc. But that is not the point here. And along those lines, ClamSlammer, I think that you missed my point. My point was that any time you are dealing with the general public, customers, etc. , you are going to have a rough time. And that's exactly why I tip people in the service industry.

ClamSlammer, you were one of the other people that I was hoping would respond to my post. I read your posts on here quite a bit. You seem pretty knowledgeable, especially when it comes to life in Zona Norte & I've learned quite a bit. Also, your choice of words is often so eloquent. For example, "imbecile". What a great word. I don't hear it often enough, as I usually only get called "moron" or "dumb ass". So, thanks!

Finally, a little side note here: I contribute when I can on this board but it's not nearly as much as I would like & that's simply because I can't find the time. Now, with all my shit cancelled or moved until way later in the year, I've got nothing but time! So, that being said, this is actually the first time in my life that I've gotten involved in an online debate &, well, I'm as giddy as a school girl! I know we're talking about waiters & it's on a forum for men to discuss hookers in Tijuana but, hey, you got to start somewhere, right?

All jobs are easy. To the guy who has never done it.

Years ago, and I forget the reasons, my son worked as a janitor for a brief period of time. Now any half-wit can sweep a floor, right? Well, he had an older "mentor" who taught him the ins and outs. One day years later he was assisting me in sweeping out my shop. I had no idea how involved something as simple as sweeping a floor can be. It all depends on how well you want to do it, and how much pride you take in your work. Much like anything else.

What infuriates me these days is that so much of the service industry has taken it right in the shorts. All the talking heads are pontificating about sheltering in place, and don't leave, and it's for your own good. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people in the service industry are facing serious economic disaster. But who gives a shit about those people, anyway?

I'm a bartender and serve also, I'm not going to say it's a difficult job, but it's definitely not a job most people can do, it can be tough. However, us people working in the service industry make pretty good money, plus I only work 25 ish hrs a week giving me plenty of time for school and hobbies.

I guess there's two different definitions of "easy" when it come to a job. "Easy" as in it's an easy task to perform like carrying a plate of food. And "easy" as in easy to learn, requiring little or no training / education / intelligence. A garbageman's job can be defined as the second definition of easy. Whether it meets the first definition is debatable.

But what you describe above about a waiter's job being difficult, well, not really. You describe tasks in which waiters do not perform, such as making sure the food is prepared the specific way it was ordered and keeping food separated. Those tasks are performed by the cook, not the waiter. And the tasks you describe as "difficult" can only be difficult for people with an IQ below the level of imbecile. You say that bringing the "correct" plate of food is difficult? How hard is to tell the difference between a hamburger and a salad? Not that hard I hope. Bringing the correct food is so easy any 10 year old can do it. And while on rare occasions customer do complain to the waiter about things that are not under his control, like the parking lot, it is extremely rare. Most diners' complaints involve quality of food or poor wait service such as forgetting to bring requested items. Overall, a waiter's job is extremely easy. Greet customer, write down their order, relay the order to the cooks, carry plates to the table. Follow up a couple times to make sure food is satisfactory and offer refills and condiments. It's about as easy a job as there is.

I agree with most of this except the part about not tipping the bartenders. I always tip whoever serves me my drink whether it's a mesero or bartender. I even tip them when they give me change in dollar bills to tip the girls, just one dollar but they seem to appreciate it.
