I went solo my first time. Glad I opted to stay outside zona Norte in hotel Ticuan. Did escorts twice a day and barely left the hotel. Secure valet parking on site there too. 20 minute walk down the main tourist street to the Zona when you're ready to explore.

If you live in the US, it's not cheaper to fly to Tijuana. It's much cheaper to fly into SD. There is a shuttle at the airport that will take you to the trolley. It's $2.50 to go from the SD airport straight to the border and it's pretty quick.

A lot of people go there alone the first time. I went alone my first time. Since, I have gone back several times and met friends at HK I meet up with every month now. Everyone is stressed out / nervous the first time going to Tijuana alone. It's really very simple. Take the trolley to the border. When you walk out of Mexico customs there will be a bunch of cabs sitting there. Just tell them to take you to HK. You'll be there in 4-5 minutes. It's safe. You'll love HK.
