What's the deal with the new border crossing Tomjackin? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

What sucks about the new border crossing is the foot path is you go behind the McDonalds / trolley stop up the little hill on the east of freeway and then through the little customs room and down a ramp / stairs onto the street right where the line is for people that are waiting to get into the US.

Rather than being that wide, flat expanse, it means the if you arrive just as a trolley full of commuters arrive, it can get bunched up. Or as what happened last night to me, one person in front of me wanting to take their shopping cart down the steps instead for the perfectly fine ramp the Mexican government paid good pesos to build for people with strollers / carts or the disabled to use. The Mexican government still lets people (local or tourist) pass without inspection if they have no bags, those people have to push the stop light button to pass.

And because the main taxi stand is still on the west side, you have to cross the footbridge on the Mexican side to get a taxi (actually at night you can often get taxis at the place where you get dropped off so you can walk up the hill on your left instead of onto the bridge. It is a crap shoot though because if there haven't been recent dropoffs, there won't' be taxis there so you might have to wait). The overall walk itself is about the same if not slightly shorter. I actually don't mind it the times I go into Mexico anymore.

We have to get used to it since that area on both the US and Mexican sides will be freeway in a few years (Mexico actually has its new port of entry finished and open, but the US Congress hasn't funded realigning I5 yet (Congress has also not authorized funding to finish working on the new port of entry building either. Although supported by both parties, the gridlock in Congress means funding for this is always getting attached to bills that never get passed). This means the whole crossing experience in both cars and on foot will be sucky until 2016 at least.

The sink counters have been well weight tested and if the building comes crashing down, I have a good feeling that the sink counters would stay intact!
