I've been reading this forum and another for a while now and have finally prepared my first trip. The main reason for my trip is to check out Hong Kong and Adelita's, but will probably check out the other bars nearby as well. I'm not sure if I'll try out the street girls or not yet but probably will. I will be visiting the zona norte Oct 30 and 31, staying at Cascadas. Even after all the research I've done, I still have a few questions.

1. Can you get change easily at Bars like Hong Kong, Adelitas, if you go to the bar and get it yourself? Or is it too much of a hassle? For instance, Lets say I wanted a bunch of 1's to tip girls with, or just wanted a 50 or 100 broken.

2. Has anyone tried using the 50% coupon for Cascadas on the Las Chavelas website? Do they actually ask for proof of purchase for the bucket of beer or what?

3. Is anyone from this board going to Hong Kong on Halloween? Or the day before perhaps?

I usually make a trip to my bank before each Tijuana trip. Stock up on 1's 5's and 10's. I have found it best to seperate your money by denomination and now which pocket to go to for which bill. While you can get change at the bar, I find it to be a hassle and better to come prepared. It is also a good idea to hit a cambio in San Ysidro and change a 20 or 2 into pesos. The exchange rate in San Ysidro is usually a little better than you will find in Tijuana. I have found the best time to use pesos is when dealing with SG's. You will find an instant savings, when they ask for 20 dollars counter with 200 pesos and you will save about 4 dollars. I would stay away from bringing 50's or 100's. As far as 20's go its a good idea to have a bunch of them for back up. Just be careful where you keep them. Many people carry them in socks and shoes, but the bandito policia have been looking there. It is a good idea to sew a hidden pocket somewhere in to your clothing or find somewhere unconvential to stash the bulk of your bankroll.

As far as the coupon for 50% off at Cascadas it is a great deal. I used one a couple weeks ago. It can be kind of a hassle to use coupons in Mexico. I started out by finding a masero in LC who new a bit of english, (look for Eric he might remember how the coupon works) in the begining they couldn't figure out what I was trying to do they thought it was for 50 % off your beer. But anyway once they figure it out the manager will sign the back of the coupon. Then take it to the hotel and be prepared to wait awhile while they try to figure it out. But once they do you will get your 50 dollar room for 25.

And I will be there Halloween It is a fun day to be in the zona. I remember last year right around dusk a fog rolled in the ambience was perfect.

I advise to not bring in anything larger than a $50 bill. I normally go to the Bar and ask for $1's there. I count the money in front of them to make sure they counted it correctly. I'm sure you've read posts where the waiters have cheated guys and don't return with the the change. It has happened to me once and I never have a waiter change it for me again.

What will happen is that they will have someone from the front desk at HK print out a reciept and sign it staple it and give you back that coupon to give the guy at the hotel desk. That is why I wrote that the previous discussion is missing the point. Under normal circumstances it makes sense for governments to make it easier for citizens to cross the border than non-citizens (I won't go down the rabbit hole of differences based on how one became a citizen). Citizens can vote, for one thing. In this bizarro world of the war on terror (and I agree with Phordphan that the war on drugs is similar) other priorities take precedence and that results in people ending up in the long, slow line for reasons they do not agree with.

I think you guys are missing the point. Our current security situation puts fighting terrorism as the very highest priority and far above convenience at border crossings, privacy, etc. So they reward people who are willing to provide extra background information with the shortest wait (SENTRI). Next come people who have documentation with a computer chip inside so that they can more easily be checked against databases (Ready Lane). Everyone else is lumped together because they need more scrutiny.
