I can't believe those cops were stupid enough to have their picture taken. Though I guess if they took you 3 blocks down onto a dark street there's no proof of what happened so they were maybe covered anyway. But yeah, the only time I take alcohol onto the street there is when I'm walking from HK directly to Cascadas next door, though I've mostly stopped doing that for fear of getting stopped. All the years I've been going to Tijuana I've fortunately never had a negative encounter with policia. The one (positive) encounter I've had was with a policia sitting in front of Adelitas who politely but in a serious tone warned me not to carry my cellphone the way I was carrying it as someone could've snuck up from behind and robbed me. I also stay low-key and don't fit the demographic they're targeting, which is what I suspect is the reason why I've never had any issues.

Why did you even open yourself up to $300? You are talking USD right? The goal is to spread the $ around (I have both a slim fanny wallet and money belt) and minimize the risk of loss from those clowns. I keep $100-$150 in my pockets with rest back in my room safe. You could proly have gotten away with $20 USD apiece.

Yeah I know. I had just walked out of my room as cascadas. I grabbed $300, walked into HK for minute to talk to a buddy, and walked right out with a beer. I got about 3 steps outside of HK and it was over. I don't really know if the police negotiate or not. I've never been trouble before. I figured they'd check my pockets anyway. In the end, I didn't care. Went back up to my room, grabbed more money, and went back down.

I asked for photo and surprisingly they said okay. I don't know anything about tourist police. I had two 100 bills under my phone cover and it's see through so they could see I had at least $200 because they took my phone. He said, "will I find more in your pockets when I check them?" I said, "yes you will. " Then he took that money. He actually asked me where my car was. I assume he was going to drive me to my car and check to see what he could find there. But I'm not from around there. I fly into San Diego and go to Tijuana. He asked me if I was lying about my car. I just laughed and said, "guys, you just took $300. I took the trolley to Tijuana. I don't have a car here. Then they took me back.

But the reality is, if I had $20 in my pocket it would have been the same result. They don't want to take anyone to jail for anything. They just want your money. I new that was the case. I wasn't nervous about anything. I was only for gone for 5 minutes and right back squeezing asses again.

Theres so many ways to view this. Did he just get kidnapped driven off and shaken down? Were you in cuffs when rhey drove you to darker street? Are you a high income person who makes more than 300 per day? On one end, we think, "the hells wrong with you man? But if the $" is no object, and you got a adrenaline rush from the experience that the woman would not be able to provide, how can we tell you that your a fool?. We can't. Plenty guys will drop $300 in hk in ten minutes no problem. I never give the policia nothing. You may not have cared, but think of the damage you did for others. Your unbelievable juvenile actions simply encouraged bad behavior by the cops, who certainly don't need more encouragement.

Just for anybody who is reading this, public drunkenness is illegal. An open container on the street it also illegal. Only a brain-dead gringo would do such a thing. One should never give the cops a reason to hassle you. And, if they do, don't give in to their demands for money. Of course this presupposes that you weren't committing an infraction to begin with.

Everybody thinks you deserved whatever you got. Frankly, you were lucky it was the cops who robbed you and not a street thug. You, sir, are a textbook reason why gringos get hassled in Tijuana. Laws don't apply to gringos. Until they do. SMDH.

I know that place is pretty scary, specially dark alleys and stuff, but you got to stand up to yourself at some extent, or not even go at all. Its mostly extortion. I know we are in their world, but they have a family that loves and care for them as well. They're nothing special.

Those cops can get fired for bribery and they don't want that.

Luke Powell has a great video on how to deal with cops. Basically, don't be rude even though they are the ones rude robbing you, but don't be rude and be diplomatic.

Same goes with the meseros, don't be rude to them even though they are the ones being rude, and be diplomatic and you'll come off easy.

I've had several meseros trying to shortchange me and snatching half beers off my table and what not, and I did not lose my cool at all, I simply told them that I feel like that was not fair and I want to tell management about it. That worked out every single time.

If they are stupid enough to pose for a picture. Kindly ask for a picture (preferably next to the number painted on there truck. Then head over to the sindicatura office in palacio with your evidence.

I accidentally said they asked me for a picture. They didn't ask me. I was laughing, (and not sober) but I asked them if I could get a picture. I honestly thought they'd say no but they didn't. They both walked over and they took a selfie with them. Their truck with flashing lights was right behind us so the pic didn't turn out that well. But it's not bade up. I was surprised they said yes. I didn't care they I had been robbed. It was all just funny to me.
