I had to fight with two dickhead meseros to stop the shake a chica drink scam. That is 2 more reasons totaling 7 reasons I avoid tipping the meseros.

I can't stand meseros. And I hate fichas because of the meseros. I prefer to chat with chicas while tipping them.

If you're referring to me saying I might not ever visit Tijuana, I understand your sentiment. That does not make your post any less unfriendly and gatekeepy.

I have been visiting a different, much smaller town in northern Mexico and I've just noticed that slightly higher tips meant I got way better service.

Another poster mentioned that some meseros upsell and skim on beers and I can see why that would piss him off, but I haven't seen that happen yet. Maybe if I do ever make it over to Tijuana I'll change my mind after dealing with a much more crowded and fast paced atmosphere, and perhaps less honest actors.

In any case, if I have an opinion on something, I'll post it if I feel the impulse. I paid my subscription and haven't broke any sitewide rules.

I have never been cheated in HK. Tropical meseros have the habit of taking $20 for a beer then conveniently forget to bring back $16 change.

Chicago's prices are 55 pesos for local beers and 70 pesos for premiums. I have not been cheated in Chicago, usually tip them well for good service. I understand how a guy would get pissed off when meseros think they are smarter then him and hold off 5 or 10 pesos. Meseros are lowly street urchins. It's hard to expect honesty from them. Even a few respectable, church-going, bible-thumping figures in Tijuana I have dealt with, were stealing from employers, squeezing employees and vendors every chance they get for grafts and bribes.

Good meseros deserve good tips for their services and honesty. Dishonest meseros should be reported to their bosses so they can be reamed.

My last drink with a chica several weeks ago, I was interrupted by 4 different meseros in a spand of under 10 minutes plus one fuckhead flaming homosexual cameraman that bitched that I did not buy a photo. I averaged Tijuana four times per week. If anyone wants me to tip a lot more, I am fully on board. Send me your money and I will spread the love in tips to everyone.

Couldn't disagree more. I actually agree with the OP, which really doesn't matter. My larger point: why is his opinion not of value? How many posts are required before my opinion matters?

I don't think we should just throw money around like arrogant Americans. But the OPs point about the difference in $2 is perfectly valid. I can tell you 2 stories where a mesero saved me a lot of trouble because I treat them well. Don't get me wrong, I do not tip outrageous amounts. But there are hidden benefits treating people with respect vs getting upset about 50 cents, which I have read on this forum.

I don't think you get the point. It's not the money, it's the principle. If someone tries to cheat you, I don't believe in treating that person with utmost respect. For example, a couple of beers at CC is $6 dls. They have a 19:1 rate posted so cost is $114 pesos. Every single mesero, every single time will charge you $120. They pocket the $6 pesos, about $. 30. They probably make $10-$20 dls a night extra by cheating mongers. But it's not about the money. Many Americans wouldn't even bother stopping and grabbing $. 30 if they found it on the street. And yeah, it does bother me every time I get cheated out of that $. 30. Not enough to come back with an AK but it does bother me. It's the lack of respect on the part of the mesero, not the half can of soda I could have bought with that $. 30. It bothers me more because I am a frequest visitor and have access to the Zona literally whenever I want. For those of you flying in from NY once every two years yeah you're too immersed in puta Disneyland to let $. 30 bother you. That's understandable. I believe in treating people with respect as well, but finding meseros that deserve respect in the Zona is like finding needle in a haystack.

I agree with Goyo on this. The difference between $1 and $3 is negligible to me, but in Mexico, where the minimum wage is $5 a DAY, its a huge difference to them, and it encourages better service. I have not been to Tijuana yet, and honestly don't know if I will visit due to the high crime and danger that it brings.

Shit, here in the US if I'm leaving a bar at 2 am and see a group of cops at a taco truck, I'm going to head over to have tacos because cops mean safety. In Old Mexico, they could shake me down for a bribe, or I could even end up getting shot to death in an ambush against them.

To each their own but I have traveled to too many countries that don't have a wonderful club like HK. Or private taxi's to haul my ass etc. So giving an extra buck or two to support the "team" that makes this experience dam nice is a small effort on my side and helps them do what they do. In part I feel if you don't support those who are trying to earn a living the "legal way". Regular job at HK or wherever working for tips. They will be forced to do stuff like work with the police to tip them off or learn to hate the gringo's. Which isn't good. How can I not support this place when I go back to the "good old" USA which is not good and just plain sucks in terms of mongering.
