You should be OK with a color copy of your passport. I've been stopped a number of times through the years and was OK with a driver license. I had my passport but didn't show it. Actually, I've returned through border control with only a driver license where you're required 2 IDs. I believe if you can prove it's you in the photo, and you're in the system, you're OK getting home.

I think you'll be fine. A general rule of thumb that I follow is that Mexicans will respect you a lot more if you at least try to speak Spanish with them. So if you're not already conversational, at least learn the Spanish for what you would anticipate having to say in such a scenario. And that would also include, if necessary, apologizing for not knowing enough Spanish to understand what they say to you in response. They'll probably know a little bit of English in that case, but they'll cut you a lot more slack if you are at least trying to speak Spanish with them.

Personally I always stow passport, cash, and a credit card in the safe as soon as possible.

That passport is the only thing getting you back in your country.

Lose it and you got some running around to do plus the questions about where you were and how you lost it.

Carry a photo copy in your Tijuana wallet. I do not carry a regular wallet in Tijuana. You do not need 4 credit cards, pics of fam and all sorts. You need a drivers licence, health card, bank card, passport photocopy, and what ever else you require in Tijuana. Some use credit cards, I do not but keep 1 in the safe. That will get you cash, meals, hotels in case of robbery.

If the cop does not like it, tell him you have been robbed before and would gladly produce the passport at the hotel.

The passport card sounds like a good alternative for USA Citizens.
