What To Do In Costa Rica

    To Jayagopal50,

Jay, If you are looking for something to do while in San Jose, and get tired of the Del Rey and Blue Marlin or just want to get out of San Jose city, then I might recommend a side trip for you and your friend to Jaco Beach.

Regular Tico bus leaves from the Coca Cola Bus terminal a couple of times per day. I believe there is a 1 PM bus, and perhaps others too. One way tickets are around $ 3. 00 each and the trip takes around 2 hours or so, depending if the bus stops for refreshments along the way.

Jaco Beach is surely not the best beach in CR. But you will get the 'beach feeling' there similar to what one would expect in Daytona Beach or Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

Many people say they do not like it in Jaco Beach, but personally I like it fine. I don't go to Jaco Beach to lay on the beach or go swimming in the ocean. I go for the girl "action".

When you get to Jaco, (ask driver) and get off at the bus station, across from the Best Western Hotel.

Best Western is not very chica friendly though. If you choose to stay there, you may well experience some trouble, or added expense, (like a $ 50. 00 chica fee - added to your hotel bill) if try to take an unregistered guest (like a P4P gal) back to your room. This is a family hotel, not a mongers place. Plus their rooms are 'higher than a kite' in price too. Nice place, but not for you!

Take a taxi to find a hotel:

    Suggested Hotels -

Los Four Grandes Hotel - Chica friendly, and about $ 30. 00 this time of year for a room. Real big king size rooms, with two beds in two rooms- like a suite, both of you can stay in the same room and even brings girls up without bumping into each other. As there are 2 separate bedrooms in each room (suite) - this hotel is adjacent to the Beatle Bar - where you will find most of your P4P girl action at night starting about 8 PM. This is like a mini-Del Rey (in San Jose). And there should be 40-50 or so gals there by 10-11 PM.

Tangeri Hotel, just down the street a couple of blocks - around $ 50-60. 00 rooms. Chica friendly.

Villia Crejole Hotel- nice rooms with kitchens about $ 35-40. 00 per night. About 3/4 mile over toward the West side of town. $ 2. 00 by taxi. They have an outdoor lounge & small intimate restaurant, (drinks are moderately priced, but the food is expensive there), and they have an absolutely beautiful swimming pool, in a lovely garden sitting, just the best place to hang out during the heat of the afternoon. Chica friendly.

Blue Palms Hotel - about 1 1/2 mile from the Beatle Bar - $ 2. 00 by taxi - nice clean rooms in a newer hotel - $ 30. 00 per night. (Not sure if this place is chica friendly or not) - I've never stayed there, but it looks nice & new from the street and is fairly inexpensive.

    Jaco Beach Chica Schedule:

Afternoon - go to the Colonial Restaurant and get a sidwalk table on the patio. Get a drink, and watch the parade of chicas (the same ones who will be at the Beatle Bar that everning, and the other joints). As they stroll by, try to make eye contact with them - if you are interested, they may stop to talk, chat them up, offer to buy them a drink, and then you can perhaps get a 'nooner' for a lesser price than at night. (Should be perhaps $ 35-40. 00 during the day- prices may vary from girl to girl though).

Evening: From about 8 PM until around midnight - It's all going on at the world famous Beatle Bar. Don't miss it!

Along about 11 PM - some of the ladies will go home. Some will go to the Monkey Bar - about 3 blocks down the street. Younger dance crowd here, but P4P girls will mix in.

About Midnight - 1 AM - Many of the gals will take taxis or walk down to Poncho Villa Restaurant. There is also a club upstairs. But I have never been up there.

Around 2 AM or so - some of these chicas will go back up the street to Nacho Daddies. A dancing club/bar, with a typically younger crowd. But follow along if you want to make a night of it, and stay up late.

Of course when you find a girl or girls of your choosing, then you will want to get a taxi or walk with her back to you own hotel for a P4P session.

They will usually start out asking $ 100. 00 (an hour). But this is the low or rainy season. Not too many gringos, europeans, or other mongering types in town. Right now. So you can usually get the price down to something reasonable at around $ 40. 00- 50. 00 an hour. Or perhaps like about $ 80. 00- 90. 00 for 'toda la noche' - an all nighter. But after a couple of hours, don't be surprized that your chica will suddenly say, " I gotta go home, to take care of my child", or something of that sort. Seldom will any of them really stay for the whole night. No matter how much you are paying them. So don't overpay.

Hope this gives you an alternative to staying in San Jose for your whole trip. Do not be affraid to take the Tico buses anywhere. Just watch your bags carefully.

If you want an upgrade to the usual Tico bus then simply ask at your hotel (in San Jose) for the person at the front desk to call either Interbus or Greyline for their daily air conditioned shuttle buses (like large mini vans) to Playa de Jaco. Interbus to Jaco is $ 19. 00 one way. Greyline is $ 21. 00 - both will pick you up at your hotel. It is best to have a reservation on these shuttle buses for the next day's trip. If possible, as they tend to fill up quickly.

I am going to CR for 30 days leaving on Sept. 19th. I may well run into you guys at the Beatle Bar in Jaco. If I catch you there (LOL). I will expect at least one cold Coca Cola from you guys. For my effort.

    Pura Vida - Steve

    Hey Dr.,

Thanks for your reply. You're correct Irazu not Arenal. Thanks for the link. I'll find my way to the Sportsmen around 6pm this Friday (Sept. 22.) before going to the Blue Marlin. The beer is on me.

I hope you mean Irazu rather than Arenal. Arenal is not a day trip from SJ, you can not go to the top (it is still very active) and I'm not aware of any bike rentals or tours in that area on the mountain itself. Irazu has a road to the top, but the fun part comes from biking DOWN it not UP (which is normally done in the sag van). I don't remember which company I did it with but you could try this link

Re: waiting at the BM. You never have to wait too long. And if you want to meet some guys to hang out with while you're waiting the Sportsmen's bar or the "CRT Happy Hour" every day between 5 and 6 at the table near the door at the BM are among the 2 best places to do it. Just don't be shy and introduce yourself.

    Hey Dr.,

I'll be staying at the Clarion Amon Plaza. Someone posted information on booking a room through the casino. I actually just booked it today; a nice suite for $80.00. I'll be there from Friday thru Monday, then off to Jaco to do a little surfing. I have no idea where I'll be hanging out. From what I read in these threads I guess I'll be at the Sportsmen or Blue Marlin at night, maybe New Fantasy or Zona Blue one afternoon. I am going to try to do one morning (probably Sunday) mountain biking up Arenal Volcano. I'm still trying to locate a bike rental. That's all the plans I have at this time. I think I may feel a little uncomfortable sitting alone at the Blue Marlin waiting for the girls to sashe' by. So, I'm trying to make a friend or two to pass time until a good looking tica arrives. Dr. open your mail box so we don't have to bore everyone with our mundane chat.

IMHO, taking a chica from SJ to Jaco is like taking sand to the beach. Why do it? You'll find a fine selection once you get there without all the possible complications of commiting yourself to a particular chica in advance. OTOH, taking a chica to MA/Quepos makes a lot more sense. Since you won't find a lot of good P4P options there, bringing a chica is just about the only way to go if you want some action while you're there. For the trade-off of having to bring your own "sand", you get the benefit of finding a much nicer beach. Maybe you really can get the best of both worlds. For some guys that makes much more sense than the alternative compromise of Jaco with its better nightlife but lousy beach. But 2041 makes an excellent point. Be even more sure of your selection before you take a chica to someplace like MA since, while you can always send her packing, that won't leave you with any alternatives for the rest of your stay.

It's certainly possible to get a chica to go from either Sportsmen's Lodge or the Del Rey, to spend time with you in Jaco. My experience is that the cost will be from $100-150 a day depending on how hot she is and what chemistry exists between you. However, it may be tough if you lock in on a specific chica, as some may simply be unable to go, if she has other issues like a day job or child care that she can't address on short notice.

I would also point out that she may have an entirely different agenda for spending 2-3 days in Jaco than you do, so make sure that you get along OUT of the sack, as well as that you each understand each other's expectations about the trip, and agree on the degree and extent to which she will exclusively be servicing your needs on the trip. Untold numbers of these trips have ended with the guy unceremoniously giving the chica bus fare back to San Jose to go away, because each had different expectations about the trip.

Unfortunately, as others have said, the beach in Jaco is nothing to write home about, and the town itself is dumpy as well. Unfortunately, it's the only beach town remotely close to San Jose, that has any type of reliable action. If I were bringing a chica with me, I would much rather take her to Manuel Antonio/Quepos than to Jaco. Unfortunately, the companionship action that is available in Quepos is quite poor compared to Jaco, even though the beaches are much nicer. Also, Playa Hermosa, 3-5 miles past Jaco, is a much nicer beach than Jaco itself - but there's no action there - it's all in the bars in Jaco.

    Info needed

Does anyone want to recommend a taxi driver for 4 days who has a good vehicle and speaks english well? (give email, phone number please).

Also, is the Marriot las suenos chica friendly?

One last question. staying one night at Sportsmen. Is it possible to find a chica to travel to Jaco for a few days. Price?

  11. #56
There are some really nice beaches in Manuel Antonio park near Quepos which is only an hour or so further down the road from Jaco. But it doesn't even have the P4P venues that Jaco has. There are also some decent beaches if you have a car or don't mind hiring a driver that are in the Jaco area. Its really only the beaches in town that really suck. There's a beach in Quepos that sucks even worse than Jaco, but there are no beaches near Jaco that are as nice as Playa Manuel Antonio or Playa Puerto Escondido in MA Nat'l Park (aka as 3rd & 4th beach). Still if mixing mongering and beaches are your goal, I'd say your best bet is either to go to Jaco OR for another alternative BYOC (bring your own chicas) to a nicer beach area somewhere else. Each alternative has its pros and cons and I'll leave it to others or your ownb research to find out what those are.

Personally, I think your best bet is to really just change your mindset about mixing those 2 things on this particular trip. You still have Rio to look forward to next year, but SJ has some things other than beaches to offer that places like Sosua or Rio don't and I think you'd be better adviced on focusing on those rather than trying to make this into a trip that serves all needs but does so badly. If you really have to get in some beach time and can't part with mongering for even a day or two than plan on going to Jaco for just that, a day or two, AFTER you've spent some time in SJ first to see how much more it has to offer. But just be ready to change your plans once you get there and see how it compares. And after you return to SJ early be prepared to say I told you so.

    Jaco

Jaco is the asshole of Costa Rica, don't know why anyone would go there.

This has nothing to do with Chili Mike's experience.

    Chase Star

Thanks for the great post Chase!! I'm still holding on to my vacation days from Cancun, Acapulco, San Juan, etc. where the club scene and horny female tourists outweighed the need for the mongering approach. Those days are somewhat behind me however- no more 21yo Kansas chicks or UK teeny-boppers for me... but I was hoping that CR had a similar atmosphere I could tap into besides strictly mongering. From what I've read, SJ is probably my best bet for that. Luckily, I speak fluent Spanish so I will have the upper hand. But as you mentioned, I'm sure the ticas are weary of tourists just passing through.

It's hard for me to believe that Jaco is considered an "ugly" beach, when so many describe the country as beautiful. But I have read other posts where Jaco is listed as a "5" in terms of natural beauty. Is there another beach within a somewhat decent disctance from SJ that we should check out?

I will continue to pound the information boards to plan the best CR trip possible. I really do not want to go back to DR but if I sense this will not turn out as I hope, I will pull the plug and aim our desires elsewhere. It would be one thing if I were planning this strictly for myself, but I have 5 other horny buds that are hoping to make educated choices about our trip.

I'm sure I'll have more questions to throw at you guys b4 Nov. Any other suggestions are appreciated!

Yes, that may certainly be true, and I understand you're just adding to the discussion but, in terms of the present issue at hand, are they there to pick-up the kind of guys they could find at home like Jay Max and his buddies or are they there to find some local latin lover, "shark" or, sometimes in the case of Cahuita and PV, rent-a-rasta?

I just can't resist adding one more category, CS (and thanks for your kind props on my Oasis report). Namely, FEMALE sex tourism. For an EXCELLENT rundown on what it is, see

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_sex_tourism

In Costa Rica, Cahuita is the the national capital of FST and Puerto Viejo, if you really look at what is going on around you, is the backpacker-surfer crowd's version of same. In fact, there's even a reference there to an academic paper on female sex tourism in Quepos:

    http://www4.ncsu.edu:8030/~twallace/Kimball.pdf

This will change your perspective. I honestly don't think that there is any less female sex tourism than male by Europeans and North Americans, you just have to know how to look for it, and to realize that the economics and the means for operating under the radar both work differently. I admit it took me a long time to get wise, never ever asking when I was younger why so many artsy craftsy divorcees would spend all their time in Mexico, or college girls go for junior year abroad in Spain or Italy.
