The failure of the company is becoming more certain every day, with the worsening economic situation, and a new factor in that President Lula determined not to authorize using public funds to help the company, wich has debts of over 7 bilion.

A possibilidade de falência da Varig já é admitida por fontes do governo. A quebra da empresa está se configurando a cada dia com o agravamento da situação financeira e ganhou um novo fator determinante com a decisão do presidente Lula de não autorizar a liberação de dinheiro público para sanear a companhia, que tem uma dívida acumulada de mais de R$ 7 bilhões.

Anyone planing a trip should reconsider using Varig, since it could leave you stranded. Varig has been close to bankruptcy for several years and it is facing a new crisis, which might end it for them unless the government steps in to save them, but according to the article it is very unlikely to happen.

Meanwhile TAM is expanding flights to Brazil, a new one to Manus to open in June and Gol is expanding its domestic and latin american flights..

Funcionários da Varig literalmente vestiram a camisa da empresa e manifestaram-se hoje a favor de uma intervenção do governo federal, a quem acusam de negligência no caso. Reunidos pela manhã na sede da Varig, ao lado do Aeroporto de Congonhas, em São Paulo, um grupo de 10 comissários que se intitula "variganos" fez uma defesa veemente da empresa, que completará 79 anos em maio.

I will be in Rio April 29 - May 6 for mongering... It is my 4th trip and on other trips, I have met up with other mongers and had a good time. If there are any other guys flying solo drop me a line.

Any one looking for cheap flights from canada ? Check out this site out http://www.flyforless.ca/ They have tickets from YEG to GIG for $1400 including taxes. Air Canada was going to charge me $2200 CAD and it is on the same plane.

www.flycheapol.com I've been using these guys for 4+ years and they are rarely beat. My ticket for March 13th is going for $689 plus a $40 service fee so a total $729. I missed it at $649+$40 or $689 total from US west coast. They favor Continental but recently started selling "Q" class economy fares which only grant 50% elite mileage credit, bummer. The old tickets were "Y" and you recieved full elite credit. Anyway, sometimes their quotes are high so just be patient and check back regularly, they will drop. It seems the price gets better closer to your departure (??)......

For those looking for inexpensive tickets to GRU and GIG, check out LAN. There have been a lot of low rates lately, but the $499 plus tax that LAN has seems to be quite good. Has one stop in Lima.
