Do a 1-3 day boat tour to the jungle, it is very nice (make sure you get all your meds in order, a friend of mine caught Malaria). Otherwise be safe and stay well inside town.
Wish I was there in Manaus, but I am stuck in Rio, poor me ........
Do your homework, find bars, find streetgirl places, make sure you don't get set up with minors, use taxi drivers to show you the brothels and street girl places.

It all depends on the building. I know several Rio residents whose apartments or those of their neighbors have been burglarized. Perfect example of how things can change was an apartment I rented recently. The porteiro during the day was great. However, he took a couple of days off and some young punk with keys took over. It did not give me a good feeling. Add to that I usually had to wake the night porteiro up to get in, I did not feel particularly safe in that building.

Cooking? I do like cooking (specially when the girls cook for me) but that's not the main reason to choose an apartment.
