New to this forum, but not to the lifestyle (mostly SE Asia). This will be my initial trip into Quito and looking to see if anyone else will be around the dates of May 3rd - May 19).

Many years experience around the world but I am a newbie in Quito. Anyone interested in getting together for a beer and possibly some words of wisdom for me please pm me or leave a message here. I am a New Yorker who has been living in Costa Rica for the past two years and am conversational in Spanish. I had quite a few travel points so I bookd three hotels in Quito; Sherraton, Hilton and Marriot. Any comments on these by experienced members would be greatly appreciated.

I'm here but for me this is a one man job, sorry.

In any case, Tung did such a good job with the maps that all you need is cab fare and basic common sense security wise:

Stick to cabs, if none is available outside your hotel (going to the chongo) or the club (on the way back) just make them call one. If you do decide to use buses, keep your belongings to a minimum and be CAREFUL of the pick pockets. Don't ride the buses after 8 PM.

Don't take the girls to your place/room.

Don't accept drinks from strangers.

Always carry only enough cash for what you'll consume, plus 10$. Don't flash a big roll in the chongos, or anywhere else for that matter. I usually carry $40-$60 in my pocket for spending and the rest in my inside coat pocket, with my papers.

Try to limit things you carry with you to a minimum: notarized copy of passport and cash in the right amount for your plans of the day. Even Tung lost his camera to a pick pocket...

Limit credit card use to the minimum, and none at the chongos. Most don't accept them anyway and the risk of fraud is too big.

Do NOT get drunk in the lower end chongos, and even in the higher end place try to keep in control.

Pretty much all you need to know, and Tungs info in your pocket and you're set.

Have never been to Ecuador. Was in Peru and Colombia in 2007. Speak reasonably good Spanish. If anyone will be around then (I have allotted 2-3 weeks for Ecuador but would like to see as much of the country as possible) and will help show me around the city for a while, I will return the good karma! (Perhaps with some beers)

P.S. am also planning on traveling to Colombia for three weeks (around March 25 to April 15th, so am looking for like-minded individuals there as well).

Thanks for the heads up on the Sheraton, I usually stay there when I travel to Quito and had not tried to bring in anybody, I usually do my stuff out but it is a good advice. Thanks

I brought a chica into the Sheraton about a year or so ago. She was a young, thin very tan Colombian. Very presentable but it was quite obvious what she was there for.

As soon as we walked in, the security guy was on us and escorted us directly to the front desk. She had to show her ID and sign in, that's all. They also asked me (told me, really) that she was a second guest. As you may know, the hotels in Ecuador charge for extra guests. I insisted that she was just a friend/visitor and wouldn't be spending the night. They let me get away with that because it wasn't too late, but one other time at a different hotel they added the $15 to my room and refused to remove it when I was checking out.

The process is a little embarrassing but doable. If I were to do it again, I'd mention it to the doorman/security guy on my way out just to smooth things on my return. I might even clear up the "second guest" issue one way or the other just to avoid the b. S. When you show up with her later.
