The lodging is about 150%-200% the "normal" price and most food/beer $$ is about 150% higher due to many more tourists in January, February, and March. The Punta cana/Bavaro area is totally dependent upon tourists and there attitude is get the dinero while the tourists are here. Most tourists are trying to escape the cold winter months back home and are similar to the 'snow birds" in Key West, Palm Beach, etc. Of course this year it could be different with the world wide $$$ slump and fewer tourists. I am sure that the earthquake situtation is not helping. Yes, the weather is hotter with less wind in April. I would guess the April temp to average 85 degrees.

I just did not want you to spend extra dinero if your schedule is flexible.

That's nearly 5 weeks. Is there a typo in those dates, or are you really going to be there for almost 5 weeks? If so, I'll be around Sosua during the last week in February (Feb 23-March 3).

Is January, February and March any higher than when I was there the week of Christmas?

I didn't see any in Punta Cana. I mainly hung around Bavaro area. Sure, one or two here and there but not a lot.

just a quick note to say that everything in Bavaro/Punta Cana is much more expensive in January, February, and March due to the "high" season. If your plans are not totally set April is a much cheaper time. I will go in early April, right after Easter. The Domincans have no sense of the world economy and they live in the past where they would double the prices on everything in Janauary, Feb. And March. I am sure that 2010 will be no different. I have asked my Dominican friends about this $$ topic and I was told that Dominicans never change their way of thinking. It is like they do not understand that a small profit is better than no profit.

Careful I just found out my so called novia's primo was actually her boyfriend who lets her go out with gringos. Be very careful with these 20 year olds they aren´t after us for our good looks. Be careful with these cute little waitresses in the casinos they are being coached by the old pros.

I know the guy is her cousin, he dates her roomate, in the past we've gone out together and he's always in the next room fucking her brains out. I know the types that have a "cousin" and this guys is family.

I know some girls are in what I call "the gringo business". I just coached a friend today about his new girl. She must think all DR girls are like that (most are), because while we were out on Sunday she was bragging privately to my girlfried about how he bought her a new cell phone, clothes and gave her $200 and later my girlfriend finds her talking to her husband.

I warned him before he went out with her not go crazy and buy her stuff but he took this as a lesson learned.

For me, after a year of searching, I've found a good one now. She's got a good job, after going out for 3 months, she hasn't asked me for any money. Once I gave her 2,000 pesos when her wallet was stolen. I buy her presents, nothing too expensive and it's all appreciated. Also, I wear alot of fancy t-shirts and she bought me one for my birthday. It seems like all normal GF stuff, but my radar is always on for the "angle".

Now I'm sure I'll screw this up by getting caught fucking around.

Well, one consequence of the Haitian Earthquake is that flight availability to POP is noticeably better now than it was 2 weeks ago for dates in late February. I was trying to get a Delta award flight for the last week in February and was out of luck a couple of weeks ago unless I spent at least 50K miles, but when I checked today, I was able to get the dates I wanted for the base 35K miles. These were also the exact flights I wanted, with a red-eye out of San Diego, and just 1 stop with reasonable layovers in Atlanta each way, which happens to be the best routing available out of San Diego to POP.

I still haven't decided where I'm staying, but I probably intend to spend 3 days at Blackbeards, and 5-6 days in Sosua, with maybe 1 day whale watching in Samana.

I gotta say - prior to the Earthquake, I was seriously considering taking BadBear2000 up on his offer to try Haiti instead. That will have to wait for next time, although I hope to do my part to improve the financial situation of several Haitianas who happen to be in the DR in late Feb.
