Hey MoscowMongers:

Heading to town for a couple weeks and looking for a russian newspaper I thought was called the Sporting News. The reason is that last time I was there in 2002, I picked up a copy at the newstand and the last half of the paper was dedicated to Russian freelancers who usually worked out of their apartments. They were economical and usually fairly accomodating for a foreigner with a basic language skill.

Can someone guide me to a daily or weekly newspaper I can buy that provides such contact information? Also any pointer on Tochkas in the NW area would be appreciated as well.

Not sure if that's really a place where a lot of working girls go, but it did seem like an excellent spot to score some freebies. To get back to the point.

On Tuesday night, my last night in Moscow, I decided to spend some time in the strip clubs and then either take one of the dancers home or find somebody else at NF or whatever.

Started with 911 VIP. Had a bad feeling about it after not being allowed in two days before, but it was literally around the corner so I went anyway. It turned out to be the most dull and boring place I've ever been in. The girls clumsily undress on a small stage, then come up to you, slide their hips a couple of times in your general vicinity, pick up their tip and leave. When I came in around 11, there was only one more guy there, and about 8 or so girls. When they weren't on stage, the girls just sat around in the big chairs with distant looks on their faces and avoided all eye contact. After a completely uninspired privat with the only girl in the place above a 6, I left in disgust. What a waste of time and money. Avoid at all costs.

In the summer of 2002 I frequented the Cotton Trail brothel in Santa Esmeralda county, Nevada. This brothel and many like it have indoor lineups not unlike Moscow’s tochkas. I am, of course, humbled by the experienced and thoughtful posters here, but wanted to add a thought.

The weak dollar and the glee the anti-US press takes in it, may determine the pricing and mood of the market. However, I think its more the ability of the women to judge customers and their ability/desire to pay, is what increases prices. Each night these women are selling a time-constrained commodity, to men who are also time-constrained - as time to party winds down, so do prices, unless the dyev decides to go home alone. And of course, when you consider that Russian dyevs for 200/300 a night are a bargain for most US-based guys, its no wonder these women price themselves as they do. I still think that at even 400/500, many of these women are a great bargain. The angst some guys have, IMHO, is that you can bury a few hundred here and there on expense statements, but a few thousand is more difficult. My guess is that many big companies have been paying these dyevs nightly fees, not mongers.

With oil at $50+, Russia's economy should be blasting off, but its not - capital flight hit a record in 1Q05. I'd guess the "good old days" may return in the next 18 months, as Chinas economy slows down and US interest rates rise.

I can't make an analyzes of the dynamics and the laws of offer and demand and all those factors that nobody really understand.

But we don't need to go that deep to see that is affecting to all of us (well, most of us)

I think 1o9 probably has it right. The break up of the SU was a cataclysmic event, socially and economically, and it threw everyone into a state of disarray. There were a lot of desperate folks, women included, who needed to make a living any way they could.

The economy in Russia is vastly improved since then, particularly in Moscow, where educated, intelligent and capable people can now make salaries approaching those here in the States.

As RM commented about his email date, this creates a whole new set of problems for a single professional woman in Moscow.

Bottom line is, the girls just don't need the money that much any more. They can actually (gulp) get a job and make an honest living.

When you add to that the devaluation of the dollar, you've got a double whammy.

I think the same thing happened in Argentina. The guys who were lucky enough to be there during the winter of 2001/2002 were having a field day. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. All of a sudden they were getting 3 times as many pesos for their dollar, but the chicas were still charging pre-deflation prices. The chicas at Black, which is the equivalent of Night Flight, were doing all nighters for 30 bucks!

Of course, the market was flooded with American tourists, the chicas wised up and the market has stabilized. The only difference is, in BA the peso has yet to return to parity with the dollar. It is one of the few places left in the world where Americans still have a currency advantage.

I think it's clear the same thing has happened in Russia, or at least Moscow. The club girls are more likely to stick to their price, and there has been a definite increase in the posted prices of the internet dyefki. The rate structure used to be 50/70/100 dollars per hour, now it's 70/100/150. And it's not unusual to see some girls asking for 200 an hour or 400 or 500 a night.

Even the tochkas cost more!

So basically, it's back to normal, and we'll have to get used to it. But still worth the trip. IMHO
